Please stop with the discrimination bullshit. Grinder has a BETTER shot than any man of equal talent of playing in the NBA. She won't because she can't. Stop being such reactionaries.
Please let's not act like discrimination doesn't happen in the NBA. It may not happen to black PLAYERS but Lin and other non African American players would disagree with you about discrimination. Even David Stern would. I can see how you would believe that but I don't agree. If she was a 6'8" version of Cappie Pondexter it wouldn't even matter. They fear the backlash of cutting a woman. In some ways there is more to lose than there is to gain. Especially considering she doesn't have all world talent. That may be what it takes for one to get a real shot.
Nas: I don't believe anyone here is threatened and/or intimidated by the potential NBA success of a woman. In fact, all the feedback you're getting on Griner has nothing to do with her sex, but everything to do with her physicality and talent vis-a-vis her peers in the NBA. So in many ways, you have no grounds to claim that all or most of the sentiment on this thread is expressive of some sort of anti-woman sexism. That is insulting to the many of us who view the women in our lives, and the women around us in general, as equals, no more, no less.
Like many others in this thread, I also disagree with you re: Griner on empirical grounds - not gender. That we disagree is fine, but the straw man argument you're putting up about being intimidated by the success of a woman is not fair and has done nothing to advance your position.
It is unlikely anyone would come right out and say it but that doesn't mean it isn't true. I'm not trying to insult you or anyone else I am just expressing my belief. It may not be all and it may not be most but I could not possibly agree that no men here are threatened by the success of women in areas that men have dominated for years. IMO it could even be a subconscious response by some but there is a lot of pride and ego involved for others. This isn't something men just started doing. It's something that has united men around the world for centuries.
Many of these very strong opinions about Griner not being able to play in the NBA are primarily based on the fact that she is a woman. Most have not seen her play and some may not have even seen highlights. Many have the belief that women cannot physically compete against men. While this may be true MOST of the time there are exceptions. Many of you all don't want to believe this. You all are dealing in absolutes and I'm not. It appears that most here aren't willing to open their mind to the possibility that it could happen.
That isn't the 21st century way of thinking and I would hope any man with a daughter wouldn't have the rigid belief that their daughter can't do something because of who she is. Progress is never made that way. Not trying is worse than failure.
All I've done is attempt to point out that her size won't be the thing that will prevent her from being able to play in the NBA. It wasn't all based off opinion some was based off of the reality of the NBA today and I used numbers/videos/photos to back that up. While I believe it would be a great story I have said all along that I'm not sure if she can. Not because she's a woman. Not because she is weak. Not because women can't compete at a high level athletically against men. I've said her skill set and athleticism would be her biggest hurdle. I would like to see her try. I don't know what the outcome would be. None of us do.
