Reason for the nickname thingy is apparently the NBA is looking into having 1 game per year where nicknames are placed on the back of jerseys. Smith discusses the topic.

Mr. Mean is Larry Smith, that rebounder from Golden State in the 80s. And Gilbert Arenas is Hibachi because a hibachi is what you use to cook Kobe beef.
