Why? The Knicks don't have to work out a sign and trade. They would be doing Melo and the Bulls a favor. Therefore they will want something in return. Players and/or future cap relief would help. Getting J.R. Smith's $7M contract off the books would put the Knicks in great shape in 2016.

It might be the only way Melo agrees to come to the Bulls or any other team. Not because of Smith but because it's the difference between signing the contract with NY or Chicago (with the end result of going to Chicago both ways), and both will have different structures.

If the Knicks dump Smith on the Bulls they will go into the 2016 offseason with only Calderon and Prigioni on the books. That's roughly $9M in salaries. That would give them almost $60M to spend on free agents.

It is my understanding that if the Bulls got Melo, they could then sign one more veteran at a mid-level exception and fill out the remainder of the roster with minimum exceptions to avoid the luxury tax. Is that correct?
