I think the original point (I think) was that when you look at Tiny White Guys (™) dribble on black and white film, one of the reasons they look somewhat silly by today's standards is because they are taking extra care to dribble directly on top of the ball. I'm fairly confident that by the standards in those days, NBA players today would be called for carrying on every possession. Again, not a knock. Just an observation.
