It'll be a close call between watching any of these teams play each other or setting yourself on fire.

Phoenix
Charlotte
Orlando
Detroit
Milwaukee
Boston
Sacramento
Toronto
NYK

Irrelevant

These teams are going nowhere, but they have some guys you wouldn't mind watching.

New Orleans
Washington
Utah
Dallas
Philly
Atlanta

Irrelevant +

These teams are also going nowhere, but they are either on the rise or employ enough big names to deceive you into thinking they're relevant. They only way any of these teams make it to the Finals is through an injury to some better team.

Minnesota
LAL
Golden State
Brooklyn
Denver
Houston
Memphis
Portland
Chicago

Contenders

These are the only teams that have any chance of going to the Finals.

LAC
Miami
Indiana
SA
OKC

Updated to reflect the Rose injury. Will concede that I was wrong about Indiana, and I've upgraded Portland's status while downgraded NYK to their rightful position at the bottom of the list.

The East is a joke. At 27-21, Dallas would be the third seed in the East, but they are presently not good enough to qualify in the West, where they are in ninth place overall. This happens every so often, but this year the disparity seems to be amplified. It's like there is no "middle class" in the East; you go from elite (Miami, Indiana) to garbage.

I think the Bulls are the third best team in the East, even in their current condition, But they wont win more than 2 games in a series against Indy/Miami.

I think Portland could make the Finals. I'd like to see them get a defensive big guy. If they could get Asik without giving up one of their top 7-8 rotation guys it would put them on Indy/Miami/OKC level IMO.

I don't think the Spurs can make the Finals... :(

I also think the Bulls can miss the playoffs due basically to morale issues. Hard to get motivated everyday after Rose goes down again, and now you've lost Deng for nothing (this year) as well. That they are in contention for a spot only proves how bad the East is. I still think Thibs will walk this year.

OKC will claim their rightful place at the top of the NBA hierarchy if Westbrook stays healthy into the playoffs.

The Bulls could probably lose the rest of the games on the schedule this season and still make the playoffs.

From a competition stand point, I wonder if the league has been as bad as it is right now. I'm probably overstating it, but not by that much. The entire conference sucks, and it makes your point sort of plausible. Has Stern left the league in worse shape than we think? Some may say these talent imbalances are cyclical and not really manageable, but there are simply too many teams out there and not enough uniquely talented ballers to staff all those rosters. The latter point is something I don't see changing.

The East might very plausibly have the two best teams in the league.

Second point - What could Stern do to prevent this imbalance?

Restructure the playoffs so the best 16 teams get in, regardless of conference.

I'm down with that, but I am also for contraction. That's probably not going to happen because one of Stern's mandates while in power was expanding the league - not shrinking it - but because it takes a rare combination of skill, athleticism, and height to succeed in the league at an above-average level, I simply don't think you'll find enough good players to populate 15 man rosters for over 30 or 32 teams, or wherever that number is at right now.

Can't really toot your own horn for predicting something as easy as the NBA, but this is still somewhat accurate, with a few exceptions. Glad to see younger teams like GS and Portland in the playoffs, though I don't think they'll get far. It sucks obviously that the Bobcats will likely make the playoffs. I wouldn't rule out SA, but the final four should be LAC, OKC, Miami, and Indy.

I obviously disagree about SA. OKC can definitely beat them in a series. LAC can't. And besides that, OKC and LAC will almost certainly play eachother in the 2nd round. OKC and SA is your WCF.

Either way that will be an entertaining as hell second and third round in the west.

I think the Houston/Portland/Clippers/Warriors 1st round matchups will be great too, however they shake out. But I don't really think the Clippers are significantly better than those other three teams.

Again not rocket science, but the season has gone on as many expected. FF was right about SA over LAC. I believe it should have been OKC - Miami last year if Westbrook wasn't injured, so I have to go with OKC - Miami this year. If SA wins it will be because Pop outwitted the opposing coach, which wouldn't be surprising, but OKC should win for the same reason Miami wins - it has the best player(s) in the series.
