Maybe Phil can make Carmelo into a good player.

I thought it was clear how central an influence Phil had on both MJ and Kobe, even Shaq too, since all three to some degree have credited Phil with making them into the players they were at the apex of their careers.

Again, not disagreeing that Phil is an all time great coach that knew how to maximize great talent.

I'd say maximize and shape talent as well.

Sure.

Kobe = T-Mac

Before Phil came to LA.

T-Mac was a great player.

He Was good. Definite All-Star. But not great.

That's not true, unless there is only like 3-4 great players in the league at a time

I'm not calling Mcgrady a scrub. Had a nice career. But never won anything. I think early Kobe is a nice comparison.

Great news is he will be in NY next season. IIRC Phil was a big fan of Melo.

I think pre-2007 KG was a great player also.

Or maybe the Knicks owner has a daughter Phil can start pounding. I don't get these guys. All the fame and money in the world and they can't fucking stay retired. Are their egos really that big that staying home and basically doing whatever you want doesn't have any appeal ?

I think if you talk to people that have retired most of them will tell you that they are bored and they miss working.

Exactly.

I don't really get the anger at Phil here, brogue. Would you turn down $60 million to basically be a glorified consultant?

Its not anger its more you already have generational wealth and fuck you money to do whatever you want ( something that 99.9% of us would kill for ) and even with that, you cant stay retired? Im not saying he's right or wrong but to a joe lunch pail guy like me, makes no sense. Id even be more willing to bet that in Jackson's case its an ego thing. Been to the pinnacle with 2 separate teams and still not enough success for him? His motivations puzzle me.

I think it is because he played there and would love to bring them back to the promise land.

Right, and what he wants to do is probably get more rings. It's probably an ego thing too. I don't think you win 11 rings and stay modest. Plus, like Hawger said, he started out with the Knicks as a player and probably loves the idea of winning in LA, Chicago, and NY, and taking this position, especially with the stipulations, means he doesn't have to put in even a fraction of the work as he had to at his previous stops.

Reportedly wants to make Steve Kerr the new coach of the Knicks.

What is the appeal for Kerr? I don't get it. Never been a coach. I would think Jackson would want someone who he had worked with more closely.

He's keeping the chair warm until Brian Shaw can leave the Nuggets.

Yeah I'm also lukewarm on Kerr. His wrongheaded personnel moves ruined the mid 2000s Suns, and it seems he hasn't done much beyond being an affable TV guy. This is not someone like Spoelstra gaining experience while working his way up. This is like the VDN hire, only we don't obviously know if it will turn out that bad.
