Kristaps Porzingis has posted a new marketing milestone, landing in the top 5 of NBA jersey sales, ahead of Kevin Durant, in results released Wednesday morning by the league.
The Knicks’ 7-foot-3 rookie sensation, who wears No. 6, debuts at fourth on the list that accounts for jersey sales from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31 purchased on NBAStore.com.
The most popular-selling jersey belongs to reigning MVP Stephen Curry, followed by LeBron James at No. 2 and the retiring Kobe Bryant at No. 3.
Porzingis’ ranking also puts him ahead of such luminaries as Durant (5), Russell Westbrook (7), James Harden (9), Paul George (12) and Anthony Davis (13). Carmelo Anthony came in at No. 15. In team jersey sales, the Knicks ranked fifth.
Porzingis’ popularity has translated on a lesser extent to the All-Star voting that ended Monday night. In the latest update, Porzingis — averaging 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks per game — ranked seventh among frontcourt players (the top 3 get in as starters). However, a late push has been made in his native Latvia.
The All-Star starters will be announced Thursday night after which the coaches will vote on reserves. Porzingis has an outside chance of being selected for the main event.
The 20-year-old Porzingis has played in all 43 games, though he is listed as questionable for Wednesday night’s game against the Jazz after hurting his foot Monday. Porzingis recently stated his goal of wanting to play in all 82 games after his durability was questioned after the draft.
