Fuckin A, just when things are going well, Josh Smith out 2-4 weeks

Still, 5-0

I expect that streak to end at Boston later in the week (no, not here on Tuesday  )

That game last night was exhausting. Very draining emotionally. From Marvin Williams draining that 3 with 7 seconds left...so close to stealing that game. To Pierce doing what he does. I wish they would have played the passing lanes a little tighter and tried to deny him the ball. Make someone else beat you. Ray Allen's shot was off the whole night and I'd even rather have Garnett taking that shot, you know he doesn't want to. Oh well.

I just hope they can recover from a clearly devastating loss. Home-and-home coming up with the Nets, should be able to win both of those but I hope they don't come out flat. Still, having played 5 of their first 7 on the road and all but one against playoff teams, I don't think you could have hoped for a better start.

And as a sidenote to all the NBA haterz (Not that they'll be reading this anyway)- this is why I love the NBA. This had the intensity of a playoff game. There were big shots and big plays made on both ends. This was not a phone-it-in game in the early season. Both teams were putting out maximum effort. Even though it didn't end the way I would have liked, it was just an incredible game.

J-Smooth coming back Wednesday

I can't wait

They've been treading water since his injury which is all that you can really expect. He's their defensive stopper. I know it's because the Hawks, even making the playoffs last year, were a below .500 team that Josh Smith never gets defensive POY consideration but if they do this year he should. The difference when he's in there is so obvious. I can't think of too many players that aren't 7 feet or 300 pounds that are as intimidating defensively.

And good for my man Marvin Williams for stepping up in his absence

gotta tell ya Bagels, I've got zero respect for Mike as a coach...he needs to go, imo...

I'm with you, not a big fan either. But thankfully he hasn't really cost them much with his decision making so far.

The Atlanta Hawks reached an agreement in principle with free agent forward Marvin Williams, a source close to the process told ESPN.com.

Williams is expected to sign a five year, $37.5 million contract as early as Friday, according to the source. The deal also has some hard to reach incentives that could boost the value of the contract to $43 million.

Williams' agreement came after more than a week of speculation and reports that a deal was done, but sources close to both sides of the process insisted that the deal was close but not done. Now, it appears that both sides are ready to take that final step.

Once Williams signs, the Hawks end an expensive summer that allowed them to essentially bring back all the key pieces from a team that made it to the second round of the playoffs last season.

The team re-signed free agents Mike Bibby and Zaza Pachulia earlier this summer, and they are currently in talks with Joe Johnson about signing an extension. Factor in the addition of Jamal Crawford via trade and first round draft pick Jeff Teague and the Hawks look even stronger than last season.

Chad Ford is a senior NBA writer for ESPN.com.

Good news as far as I'm concerned

Disappointed that Joe Johnson didn't accept the Hawks extension offer

Better enjoy this year with this squad, looks like it'll be the last one :(

I asked this in the Bulls/Hawks thread, but I will ask it here too, but why do the Hawks seem to forget about Horford in the 4th Quarter?

sorry, i was at the game. rdfc, i don't know why they forget about Horford. it's frustrating. joe did end up shooting 16-32? I believe? which is good but every play down the stretch was an iso for him, no movement at all nobody else did anything

Associated Press

ATLANTA -- The NBA has denied the Atlanta Hawks' protest over a shot-clock error.

Commissioner David Stern ruled the mistake didn't have a "clear impact" on last month's loss at Cleveland.

The Hawks protested their Dec. 30 defeat after officials failed to notice that the 24-second clock was not reset after a miss by Cleveland with 1:56 remaining. Atlanta was leading 99-98 but did not get its allotted time and wound up making a costly turnover while rushing to get off a shot. The Cavaliers went on to win 106-101.

Coach Mike Woodson asked that the game be replayed from the point of the mistake. But Stern ruled that it wasn't serious enough to justify the "extraordinary remedy" of overturning the final score.

this makes me furious. it was straight up, blatant cheating by the Cavs. Woodsons request seems very fair- replay the game from the point of the mistake. it's on tape. it's clear as day. there's really no disputing what happened, the Hawks got cheated and Stern obviously won't take anything away from the golden god, LeBron. how can Stern say it didn't have a "clear impact" on the game with a straight face? The Hawks were up 1, with possesion, with 1:56 to go. the Hawks were unable to run an actual play, were forced to rush a shot and were totally out of sync. in addition they could have taken more time off the clock, having the lead. instead the rushed shot led to an easy opportunity for the Cavs. i'm not one for conspiracy theories but i do find it awfully strange that the shot clock malfunction in Quicken loans arena at an extremely crucial point in the game. i'm willing to bet that had Atlanta scored on that possession the error would have been noticed immediately and they points would have been disallowed.

Also from last year or two years ago, isn't there a precedent for replaying a game from a certain point due to an official's error? I think Miami had a game like that.

There was a game about two years ago involving the Heat. I think somebody fouled out, but the officials scored it as the guy's fifth foul. Everything after that point was nullified and the remaining few minutes of the game were then replayed at a later date. I agree that Atlanta was hosed. There is a precedent for a replay. I think this situation would justify one.

It is a conspiracy to stop the Hawks.

  I didn't remember both teams, just vaguely remember a game like that involving the Heat. Hawks against the world

Very well-deserving. I've been a Crawford fan ever since he outplayed the teacher's pet, Jay Williams.

I actually liked the Crawford/Jalen Rose backcourt. Yes, they were a little too shooty, but those Cartwright teams were better than his coaching allowed them to be.
