Deadspin.com has obtained a longer version of the tape that contains a man alleged to be Donald Sterling making, somehow, even more disturbingly racist comments than the version released by TMZ on Saturday. In the 15-minute cut of the tape that features discussions of Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, Israel, and the Holocaust, the man alleged to be Sterling makes it clear he feels he does enough for the black players he employs:

V: I don't understand, I don't see your views. I wasn't raised the way you were raised.

DS: Well then, if you don't feel -- don't come to my games. Don't bring black people, and don't come.

V: Do you know that you have a whole team that's black, that plays for you?

DS: You just, do I know? I support them and give them food, and clothes, and cars, and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them? Do I know that I have—Who makes the game? Do I make the game, or do they make the game? Is there 30 owners, that created the league?

Yeah, I'd say that pretty much ends any of the nonsense "taken out of context" claims.

"It's the world! You go to Israel, the blacks are just treated like dogs," the man says.He says there are white Jews and black Jews, and they are treated 100% differently.

"And is that right?" the woman asks.

"It isn't a question -- we don't evaluate what's right and wrong, we live in a society. We live in a culture. We have to live within that culture," the man replies. When the woman says she doesn't share the man's views about race, he tells her:

"Well then, if you don't feel -- don't come to my games. Don't bring black people, and don't come.

Don't need to read it (but I will look for it), have enough 1st hand people tell me stuff about this guy and what a bad guy he is. Everything is about the shakedown in his life.

When I see that Jesse speaks for others who don't support him, don't believe what he stands for and yet media america loves to rush for his thoughts.

All that said, we digress from the Donald Sterling issue here.

Many are asking for the NBA to force him to sell. Maybe after a long legal battle they could force the issue, but the NBA doesn't want that at all.

They need to suspend him right away. It's the most damage they can do to the guy right now or probably in the future.

The NBA commissioner doesn't have the same authority as the MLB commissioner. Beyond suspending him they really can't do much. I imagine if he really wanted to come to the games there is nothing they could do. He likes money though so that will likely make him do the smart thing.

I feel bad for Doc and the Clipper players. They have to put aside all this crap and try to win a game while playing for this asshole.

If the players, on the whole, were really altogether that outraged, they would ALL say "we're done playing until" whatever they decided was appropriate (e.g., he's excised from the league).

Were that to happen - that is, the immediate shutdown of the playoffs - Sterling would essentially be shot in the streets on primetime TV if that's what the players wanted.

So let's not get too terribly incensed with one guy who's a known ignorant bigot to the point that we ignore what others' reactions are that actually matter to the situation. I mean, Doc Rivers gleefully went to work for the guy, for example.

(I also don't hear any other owners saying the guy is a clown either ... even Mark Cuban's mouth hasn't opened to this point afaik)

Reinsdorf and Sterling are friends, IIRC, note the deal they brokered in which Vinny Del Negro would coach the Clippers at a discount in exchange for no legal action regarding the Pax thing. They must have bonded over being miserly mismanagers in big cities or something.

The bonded years before the NBA doing multifamily housing tax evasion deals and making billions.

Baron Davis and other players have talked about him shouting stuff many times and bringing women into the locker room to show off his property but they still kept playing for him and taking those checks. The league has been aware of his behavior for a while too. Even after all of this LeBron has been the most outspoken person. Jordan FINALLY had someone write a statement for him last night.

My point - and I believe yours too - is nobody fucking cares because they like their money more ... even though if, like, 20 of the top stars said "fuck this fool" and walked, it isn't like the rest of the players would still play - you mean you support this guy? You support racism? ... but again, nobody of any importance is likely to do anything of any lasting value to do anything to this fuckhole that has any bite to it.

Mentioning Cuban is exactly what we talked about last night. Cuban has got $500K fines for saying the officiating sucks. As i agree forcing him to sell is going to be really hard. The fine has to be HUGE! $10 Mill range.

Before the Staples Center and the Clippers were good, Sterling didnt give a shit about the team. He gave season tickets to his best friends and had them over for Dinner at the stadium. He really never cared about the team. Owning this team is like him owning a bar.

Hy wtf, this bitch columnist better give me some props or she's gonna hear from my attorney . ( ok, so what if its Panther? ). Gues its ok to fight racism with more racism though huh Sandy?

hey, you know the best way to battle unconscionable racial ignorance? With even more unconscionable racial ignorance!

So was the choice made by Sandy Banks – a columnist for the LA Times, having worked there for 30 years – in her piece about Los Angeles Clippers owner and professional dating advisor Donald Sterling, in which she made the following suggestion in her lede:

"It’s time to retire Donald Sterling.

Let the real estate magnate and Clippers owner take his millions and buy a hockey team. Then he won’t have to worry about black superstars showing up for games on his girlfriend’s arm."

HA HA HA HOCKEY IS A THING WHITE PEOPLE LIKE BECAUSE THERE ARE ONLY WHITE PEOPLE IN THE NHL.

But perhaps Banks is saying that these players aren’t “star” players, which she referenced in her piece.

Ah, but maybe she means a Magic Johnson level Hall of Fame player.

Geez, got us there.
But maybe she means blacks don’t attend hockey games.

OK, full stop: We know that hockey doesn't have the diversity of the other major sports, and there are many factors behind that. Some are economic, which is why the NHL has sought to bring street hockey to cities for the last decade. Some are cultural, like prominent columnists in major newspapers writing that blacks don't have anything to do with hockey, so racist sacks of crap can find safe haven there.

Which is, you know, a problem.

Sandy Banks can be reached on email sandy.banks@latimes.com and on Twitter at @sandybankslat. Should you reach out, be nice, be respectful, do not be a jackass and misrepresent hockey fans. But, perhaps, gently correct her misconception.

Heard on the radio this morning that Magic Johnson has expressed interest in buying the Clippers. Should I be donning a tin foil chapeau if I think that seems a tad...coincidental?

I think Magic has expressed interest before in buying a franchise, and he's part owner of the Dodgers, right? It probably is coincidence, but already being involved in the story and now saying he'd like to buy the Clippers just looks odd. If you wanted to get Sterling out of the picture, this is an easy way to do it. And I still think Stiviano sounds like she's reading from a script or something.

You think you can close deals...

Even if she was, he wasn't, which is the only point of consideration.

Oh yeah, I know. If it was him on the recording, he's pretty much screwed. I'm sure pressure will be put on corporate sponsors to distance themselves from the Clippers until he's no longer the owner.

It's not like it was a big secret that he had a history of discriminatory business practices against minorities, though, not to mention the lawsuit filed by Elgin Baylor and the litany of weird/Bernstinian Look at their bodies! type comments, so I don't understand why nobody (players, defenders of the community, etc.) was outraged about that enough to make it an issue.

He was about to get an award from the NAACP fer chrissakes.

In 1984 when they were the San Diego clippers, the NBA forced the move to LA and fined Sterling $25 Mill for fighting it.

Move them to Seattle!
