Good for Weber that he grew into the whole "veteran leader" thing. Maybe there's hope for some of our young Bulls.

But I'd be real worried about any team that depends on Weber for big minutes. Between his age and his knees, there's got to be a steep dropoff in his future.

Uh, I think that steep dropoff already happened....

Personally I would be kind of concerned that some guy with wobbly knees who doesn't play inside at all anymore is on an uptempo run-and-gun team. Nelson says he wants him for when they're forced to play half court and the 3's aren't falling. I just hope he doesn't bog things down, and he's clearly a liability on defense

I guess he knows what he's doing out there, but I thought he'd be a better fit for a half court style since he's in quicksand at this point of his career.

yeah, good point. You're totally right about trying to fit Weber into that offense.

I've been trying to remember the last team that could successfully incorporate two offensive identities (i.e., run uptempo for a while, then switch to grind-it-out halfcourt).

I can only come up with the Showtime-era Lakers. But I don't know if they just looked uptempo sometimes because they were good at running the break and scoring off of turnovers. Either way, the Lakers might be the exception that proves the rule.

GS isn't very good in a half court. They need to keep an extremely quick tempo up to make up for their lack of size so this will be interesting to watch.

Courtesy Flush, good call on the Showtime Lakers. They did have a team that could get up and down in transition as well as play the half court game. Worthy, Magic, and Kareem could all run sets and post up or run the break depending on the situation.

However, this is still a dangerous combination. Think back to the 2001-02 Wizards. They had Rip Hamilton, Tyronn Lue, and Courtney Alexander who all liked to run the break and get up and down the floor. However, they were hampered by the presence of Michael Jordan who couldn't run anymore so they had to slow the offense down for him. If Webber's minutes are limited and he's reduced to a supporting role, they should be okay. But if they try running the offense through him it won't work. He can't do the necessary dirty work down in the block anymore.

They should take what they can get from Webber but they shouldn't expect anything.

I would hope this is their line of thinking....

If he can come off the bench and give them 10 pts and 5 rebounds I'd be thrilled. He actually didn't play that bad for Detroit last year, imo

I dont like the signing. They didnt need him and everyone knows how they play now. They are a team nobody wants to play in the playoffs. They can beat any team in the NBA in a 7 game series if they get hot for a few games, but conversely they lose to teams that arent as good as them more often then other teams because of this crazy, reckless play. Its funny when you see Stephen Jackson bring it up court 1 on 3 and jack a three with 21 seconds left on the shotclock and no teammates inside the 3 point line at all.

That's the essence of a Don Nelson-coached team. There was a lot of that crap going on when Nellie was in Dallas too.

They are going to beat (or at least play extremely tough) any team that doesn't have a dominating big man. That's why they play Dallas so tough - Dirk is a jump shooter. A team like Utah can play at any pace, but they put a guy like Boozer in the paint, and game over for GS.

I dont know about that. Obviously Utah had their way with GS last year, but I think GS is better this year, and while Biedrins isnt a great interior defender, he is a very good rebounder and fits in great with that team. Stephen Jackson has also played some phenomenal defense this year but doesnt get noticed for it.

Why would Chris Webber do this? He doesn't need the money. He's probably taking a paycut anyways from his days at Michigan. He must just love the game.

There is no way Biedrins can stop Boozer

They are a run n' gun team, and extremely streaky. Webber will improve their depth, but they don't have much - this team is heavily dependent on Baron Davis, Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson. Utah can play in a similar fashion, but get higher percentage shots with Boozer. Biedrins is a finesse big man. Boozer has and will continue to destroy him because he's bigger and stronger.

GS is probably paying him as much as anyone else, and probably will give him more playing time than anyone else is willing to offer.

Webber will do what he has done in recent history:

He'll do 8/23, 18 pts, 2/4 FT, 12 rebounds...go out with an injury a few weeks into the year, stay out most of the year, come back at the end of the year when the team's trying to make a playoff push, do another 9/24, 20 points, 13 rebounds, screw his knee up again, make his team barely miss the playoffs or get bounced in the first round, and collect his paycheck...
