It seems that in basketball team chemistry matters much more than any other team sport (possibly soccer, but let's not go there).

Example 1: The Knicks
Example 2: The disintegration of the Bulls 2005-2007 into the current team

gentlemen?

I'm a big believer in chemistry and I think the Knicks are just the latest example of why you can't just throw big money deals at All-Stars and expect them to win. That may work in baseball or football, but not in basketball.

I was one of the guys in 2003-04 who said the Lakers sealed their fate by picking up Gary Payton & Karl Malone and I didn't think they'd win a title with that squad. That was just a big clusterfuck of talent. I was shocked that they even made it to the Finals that year.

I believe I said that, Miguel.

No doubt. If you have team chemistry, it almost always leads to them playing good defense, and if you have 12 guys committed to playing the best defense they can, no matter what personell you have you are going to be an above average defense. Just look at San Antonio, probably the best continuous chemistry over the past decade, and the most championships. It's also how teams like Houston go on a 22 game win streak, 10 of them without Yao.

A great current example (other than the Spurs) are the 76'ers

I suppose you could argue that Igudoula is a superstar; I wouldn't. Andre Miller is a great PG, sure, but getting long in the tooth. Samuel Dalembert was looking like just another bad contract footnote. Together though they are playing great team defense and in my opinion, way overachieving by not only making the playoffs but being in the middle of the pack. Sure, in the West they wouldn't even make the playoffs but regardless I think they've really maxed out the talent they have

Example 3: The Kidd/Shaq trades

Example 4: The "Addition by Subtraction" principle

I'm starting to change my mind a little on the Shaq deal. Like many I wasn't a fan at first, but I think after a few weeks of conditioning and learning the players tendencies and his role, Shaq is getting better. He's putting up solid if not remarkable numbers and ultimately their playoff success or lack thereof will be the measuring stick for the trade, for me. I truly believe he's going to step up his game in the playoffs, not to the Shaq of old certainly, but I really think he's going to help them

Yeah, I was really hoping the Suns wouldn't continue to struggle like they did after the deadline. It looks like Shaq's starting to mesh with his new team, although they had a bad loss Sunday against my Mavs.
