Post subject: | Letter to Cavs Fans |
http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/news/gilbe ... 00708.html Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight; As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier. This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment. Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us. The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you. There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you. You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal. You have given so much and deserve so much more. In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight: "I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE" You can take it to the bank. If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels. Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there. Sorry, but that's simply not how it works. This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become. But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio. The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma. Just watch. Sleep well, Cleveland. Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day.... I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only: DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue.... Dan Gilbert Majority Owner Cleveland Cavaliers |

Good for him, I guess. However, in the coming years, I see Gilbert cowering in a corner accusing Lebron of stealing his strawberries. |

The Cavaliers' franchise has definitely decreased in value, thanks to LeBron James stabbing his own city in the back. Besides, what do Cleveland sports fans have to hang their collective hats now that LeBron's on his way out? I rest my case... |

I hope Dan Gilbert is right, but the Cavs maybe in another city before they win a title. I imagine when the ESPN guys respond to this, you see they will bash Gilbert and defend Lebron. |

Supposedly one of the big hits against the Bulls was the way they treated former players. Which I do not agree with by the way. This is in print. Good luck getting anyone to come to Cleveland now. I love the fire and passion, but this letter screwed the franchise even harder. |

Is this letter from the same person who did nothing about Lebron James narcissistic pregame tomfoolery and showboating prior to home games. Tell your story walkin' Mr. Meatball Owner. Look on the bright side, there's gonna be a lockout soon and your home state star won't be aging during the time off. Even former owner Gordon Gund sees that both the owner and the player are attention whores. |

I understand/agree/get it: Scotty Bowman and his progeny are NHL and Stanley Cup winning wizards, but, at the same time, these players (and their agents) are looking out for No. !. I think Huet is a huge issue and is--f'd up as this might sound--Huet is being used as a bargaining chip with Niemi's agent. But I dunno. I just don't see the Blackhawks org exiling Huet to the minors for 2 seasons; Jesse Rogers (?) has said as much (tho he doesn't have a much better plan for Huet). However, that Nabokov has signed with an AHL team(?), suggests there is ZERO MARKET for Huet...sigh. I'd guess that the Hawks let Niemi go and Huet ends up their No 1 goalkeep entering training camp... I guess what I'm saying is, 2010-2011 season is all about setting things up for the future--for the Bowmans and the Blackhawks. And if that means letting Niemi sign elsewhere, promoting Crawford to back up Huet (initially) and so forth, they'll do it. TRUST SCOTTY. |

Wonder if that is due to the almost universal discontent among NBA owners, or something else. Fwiw, NBA Owners are not a happy lot. Not even the guy who had Lebron on his team the last several seasons made money. they want change and they want it... next season. |

I thought some more on this and the more I think about it.......I think he HAD to do something like that. Think about it. To create a "us vs. them" mentality It's obviously a business Cavs are SCREWED. Seriously, if you're the management/owner, how do you market this team? How do you sell fans on this team? Regardless, they have to play 41 home games and convince people to come to them. There might be 500 people at their home opener. I think he's doing all he can do, trying to create some artificial fire and passion and get people on his side. I mean of course they don't want fans thinking they could have done more to keep him and didn't, but the point is they need to *something*, anything, to keep interest. |

He comes off as kind of a clown in the letter but I like it. Like Bagels said, he pretty much needed to do something like this in the short term. Also except for the idiotic part about them winning before Miami, he was pretty on point with alot of what he said. LeBron is one of the most narcisstic athletes in the world, and he did completely quit on that team and the city |

Not really. I dont know his motivation behind the letter, maybe you do. But considering LeBron did quit on the team and the city in the playoffs and then showed them absolutely no loyalty or respect at all during this whole process I can understand his anger and agree with most of what he had to say. |

W_Z wrote: so what about the other 6 years? Not sure where you're going with this? What about them? 2007 was the last season LeBron seemed to genuinely kill himself a la Kobe trying to win a title. That's pretty sad considering he's 25. The last two years when the going got rough, LeBron quit. Luckily he's with Wade now so there's a superstar that's all about winning to take over when he tries to quit next June. |
