Are they really not trying every night or do they just suck?

Byron Scott calls lack of effort around NBA “scary”

Boston Celtics v Cleveland Cavaliers

Byron Scott is old school — he played for Pat Riley and his legendary four-hour practices. He was a scrappy role player on a team filled with competitive people — Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — who only knew one way to play. That was not a team where you gave 50 percent some nights.

So the inconsistent effort Scott is getting from his Cavs this season frustrates him. The fact he has to constantly remind them to give their all is doubly frustrating.

But that’s today’s NBA, where Scott told Waiting for Next Year the effort level is “scary.”
Quote:
“Around this league, it’s like that,” said Scott on Monday afternoon. “I’m sure I’m not the only coach that has to tell his guys that they have to go out and play hard every single night, ‘We have to compete tonight’ and things like that. I talk to other coaches and it’s almost universal, which is kind of weird. To me, that should be a part of your job, to compete and play hard every single night….”

“My job is to be a little more harsh, keep them a little more accountable as we can’t keep making the same mistakes.

The coach can do part of that, but for it to be really effective that drive and effort has to demanded by other players. Kevin Garnett is a legendary practice demon. Kobe Bryant will let you know in no uncertain terms if you don’t bust it on his team. There are others, but there is a reason those two guys led their teams to the finals last season.

Scott can talk to his Cavs all he wants, until someone in the locker room steps up and demands effort and accountability they will be inconsistent. At best.

The past always looks golden when looking back on it.

I would bet Riley and other coaches had to tell those guys all the same things.

I agree with him. The difference between playoff and most regular season NBA games is remarkable.

I don't blame the players though. The regular season is a glorified exhibition season because any decent team will make the playoffs and then it all starts fresh outside of the home court advantage.

I agree with this point as well, but I think the same thing was true back when Scott played as well. Players and teams take nights and stretches off. It happened then and it happens now.

sounds like whining from a coach who probably was expecting to get Lebron and is now stuck with a bunch of players who could care less

resign then and go work at McDonalds if you don't like the system

I'm sure every coach in every sport in every era has had to do that. Does Byron Scott think Red Auerbach never had to give his team a pep-talk? C'mon now, that's idiocy. Scott just sounds like another "back in my day" old man.

Now of course there are a bunch of anti-NBA guys who'll see that and say, "See? I told you they're lazy!" I don't put any stock into that article. Of course Byron Scott's saying that. You know why? It's because his team is BAD. The better players/teams always look like they're trying harder.

And Brick, I agree...the NBA regular season is a marathon and not a sprint.

I'm not sure what Scott is trying to do by making these comments. He coaches a team with not a single superstar player. He could bench anyone at anytime, and it probably wouldn't effect his team much. Why not sit some of these guys down if they are not giving effort. If you put them at the end of the bench, they will take a huge paycut when contract time roles around. That would definitely motivate someone to play harder.

I think Kamps' point is that Conns goes out of his way to post articles that depict minorities in a negative light.

Conns way of doing it is by posting articles so he can say "Hey it wasn't me that said it, it was the people in the article!!!"

I'd amend that to

Conns goes out of his way to post articles that wil spur ANY racial talk.

I dont think he targets minorites

I don't see any of his articles targeting white people, so I think the minorities comment may be valid here...
