Post subject: | Durant: Could he be the one? |
Was talking about this tonight while watching the game with a couple buddies. We have discussed over and over whether Kobe was as good as Jordan. We have discussed at length whether Lebron could be the guy to take the greatest of all time title from Jordan. But you do not hear much talk about Durant being that guy. He could very well win his first title in a few days at the age of 23. San Antonio is on the down hill side of their success. Dallas is old. Kobe is nearing the twilight of his career. Not sure there is going to be much competition to the Thunder in the West for awhile. They could be on the verge of a big time dynasty. And Durant may very well end up being the greatest of all time. The guy can do it all. |

A long way to go to approach Jordan but this guy is a lethal weapon for sure. I can see him Top 3 to 5 all time if he has another 8-10 years in him. |

Obviously it's way too early to say, but I've heard plenty of talk that Durant will be in that discussion. I think he has a much better chance to take the best scorer ever title than best ever. I like how much time and effort he seems to have committed to rebounding, defending, and the intangibles of basketball, but he still has a long way to go in that area to reach the Michael Jordan level of greatness. I do think he's close to flawless as a scorer. The best thing about him is he's as good or actually probably better than anyone I've ever seen at being a great discretionary scorer. He knows when to let his teammates get their flow going, and when to step in and take over. Especially at home. It's almost uncanny. Also, although I feel great about my Thunder in 6 pick, this discussion would be more legitimate if we waited til he won a ring. LeBron did a disappearing stretch in the middle of the 4th again when OKC went on their run but i still wouldn't count out the Heat. |

All this verbal masturbation. How great is this guy, that guy could be the next big thing...yada,yada,yada. Meanwhile,Jordan is at home polishing his rings. 6 of them. Statistics are fun but the number 6 is the biggest stat of all. |

Jimmy, what was your heyday of basketball? I'm not making a joke, I'm just picking your brain. Was it the 80s with Magic and Bird, or was it later? |

I probably started watching around 1970. The Bulls had a great team but there were better teams they couldn't get past: The Bucks and Lakers come to mind. |

He often beat Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Elgin Baylor, three of the best players of all time. |

"The One" is a pretty loaded declaration. Jordan was the one not only because of his unbelievable talent and accomplishments but because he was unbelievably marketable; he was easily the most famous athlete to ever live. Jordan's likeness was recognizable anywhere on earth, and still is today. He took the game international, and without Jordan the NBA would never be what it is presently. Can't say the same about Russell, not to disrespect his career in any way, but he simply wasn't the same guy. People don't argue if Jordan was better than Russell because Russell was kind of an asshole and played at a time when the NBA wasn't nearly as big as it was today. Jordan's rings came at the height of the NBA's popularity, where every moment of his life was scrutinized and torn into by the media. Russell's titles came amidst the game gaining acceptance and amidst the civil rights madness. To argue over whether one's a better player is tangible but it's not as simple as saying "championships justify greatness." Robert Horry's got 7 goddamn rings but you don't hear his name come up in any "...of all time" conversations. You've got to factor in the eras, both culturally and of the league. edit: great read, JP |

The NBA was a garage league till David Stern took over. No one was at the games, they weren't on live television, everyone was coked up, and Red Auerbach got everyone to trade him stars for a pack of smokes. The NBA in the '60s was like the NFL in the '30s, where once-great college darlings went to sully themselves with the stigma of Professionalism~! after their best days had passed. So there's no world in which Bill Russell is better than Michael Jordan. |
