NBA scribe Chris Mannix from Sports Illustrated said last hour on "The Dan Patrick Show" that David Stern overstepped his authority as Commissioner for being pissed that the Spurs rested 4 guys that aren't getting any younger in Miami. HC Gregg Popovich's team was also at the end of a long road trip, too.

I can understand both sides of the matter, but Spurs' HC Gregg Popovich is doing what he feels is in the best interests of the San Antonio Spurs and I think he did the right thing in the long run. Those Spurs aren't getting any younger, and Popovich is trying to keep his marquee players fresh, especially when it REALLY matters come NBA Playoff time. It was the end of a long road trip for them, and guess what? The shorthanded Spurs nearly beat the Heat last night! Popovich knew what he was doing.

Since you've used this phrase so often, I want you to tell me exactly who is getting younger.

It's the NBA's fault for scheduling a marquee game at the end of a long road trip for the Spurs while the Heat have had multiple days off at home.

The networks don't like stuff like this. That's why Stern is probably pissed. Popivich should know better then to rest his players for a marquee game.

That phrase applies to the San Antonio Spurs. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker & Manu Ginobili have played a lot of games, including NBA Playoffs & Finals. I can understand why HC Gregg Popovich did what he did last night and I don't blame him for resting his marquee players.

What do you mean "know better"? He also rested young guys like Leonard and Danny Green. It was a deliberate fuck you to the NBA for giving his team 11 road games in one month, including 6 in a row, and 4 in 5 nights, cresting with a game at Miami who as Dan said had been given multiple days off. He's allowed to do that. Adam Silver said it best, and there's really not a damn thing David Stern can do about it.

Well, the Spurs/Heat game was the first game of an NBA/TNT twinbill. I bet Charles Barkley wasn't thrilled. He was courtside with Kevin Harlan & Reggie Miller calling last night's game in Miami...

He knew this was a marquee game. If I'm not mistaken it was the only game yesterday. Extending your middle finger to the league and the fans usually doesn't work out well for the team. Everyone has a month with a lot of road games at some point during the season. That really isn't an excuse. Fans are paying to watching their C-team.

It wasn't the only game, and like I said, he's allowed to do what he did. He's done it for three years now. I'm not sure where you're going with this. There's nothing David Stern can do. Pops is allowed to rest his players whenever he feels like it, regardless of who the opponent is.

He's allowed to do it but I'm guess the team is going to get a nice fine. I'm not going anywhere with it other than saying it was dumb. Fans pay to see the featured attractions. Sitting all of them at once is cheating the fans. He didn't need to rest 5 players at once. That's something he's never done.

Like I said, it was pretty much a middle finger to the league. I guess to the fans too, but Pops doesn't have an obligation to any fans but Spurs fans, and they dont mind him resting his players because he's proven it benefits the team and they trust him. I doubt the league fines him, and if he does it will be easily overturned on appeal. The Spurs didn't break any rules, and they've never been warned about doing it in the past. Regardless of if Stern is pissed or not, his hands are tied. Even his deputy commisioner and hand-picked successor endorsed the move by Pops. That's pretty telling.

Edit: strike that last part. Silver endorsed him resting players in the past. Still gonna be something the Spurs will use justifiably in their defense.

I've wondered if he was afraid of his teams getting beaten badly at full strength. IIRC he usually rests players against the best teams.

I'm guessing because of the scheduling disadvantages, and the fact that Miami is probably a better team, he thought they would lose the game either way. I doubt he was worried about a blowout, he seems like the type of coach that takes a 30 point loss the same way as a 2 point loss. Plus they have Memphis tomorrow night, which is another elite team that he probably was more worried about beating.

They almost won but everyone still wants to see the stars. This could be Duncan's last season. One of the reasons Kobe plays every game is he knows the fans come to see him. I understand why Pops does it. It almost worked last season.

Popovich rests his players for ONE fucking game so as to increase their chances of being able to play, effectively, for MANY other games. That's it, period, paragraph.

I almost can't see straight what with all the moronic talk trying to "blame" Popovich for doing something so fucking obvoius that ..... I don't know, if you're that fucking stupid you don't understand, you're irretreivably stupid.

THEN dipshit Stern makes sure every swinging dick in the country knows that he's pissy about a situation that, frankly, most NBA fans wouldn't have either known or given a shit about either way. How that improves the brand significantly - if at all - eludes me.

Stern probably did a terrific job for most of his tenure, but the last 3-5 years he has increasingly been a dickwart and a pox; his moving on cannot possibly come soon enough.

You're a few years older than me but I can't imagine ever getting too old for that. As far as Pops I recall him resting guys against good teams last season. Of course I could be wrong. I guess Pops is too old for statement games.

I thought it was absolutely hilarious. I used to think Pops was a bad guy after knocking off Bob Hill and running the team into the ground to get Duncan, but now I love the guy. Props to him for sticking it to the NBA and their marquee games. I don't care if the fans paid good money or not. It's their fault.
