Chicago Fanatics Message Board :: View topic - Lakers want Lebron & Melo in '14

While the 2013-14 season could be a struggle with center Dwight Howard now in Houston and star guard Kobe Bryant working his way back from an Achilles injury, the Los Angeles Lakers may not be downtrodden for long if their reported plans come to fruition next offseason.

According to Ramona Shelburne and Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com, the Lakers are hoping to make a run at Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James in free agency next offseason.

I realize there's an ESPN guy saying Kobe loves playing with these guys, but does anyone think Kobe's ego will allow him to ride the coattails of these guys to a championship or two? I cannot imagine a situation where Kobe is going to take a backseat to LBJ and/or Melo, which is the only way they'll win if indeed all three are paired together.

I could see Kobe letting Lebron because of the fact Lebron has the rings now and is the best player on the planet. And he knows that even with Lebron on the team he will be able to have his moments at the end of games as Lebron would love to get Kobe the ball.

Kobe in no way would defer to Melo. Just not going to happen.

Kobe is NBA Royalty. As Much Shaq helped, Kobe has had winning and great seasons without Shaq or other all stars.

But I am sure he was injured. He is always injured when anything goes wrong, every play, every game. Suddenly he even makes total instant recoveries!

Yes Kobe should defer to LBJ, but with everything we know about Kobe's arrogance from his interviews and Phil's books, I just can't see him doing the right thing and deferring. You could be right about him realizing LeBron is rightfully the best player right now, but I just don't know.

Kobe is not going for a 6th ring and deferring to anyone. Dont care if it is Lebron. If he cant win it as "The Man" , so be it. Kobe doesnt seem to respect too many people, but he sure does respect MJ and to have him as the only guy in front of him, in his mind, he seems OK with that.

Kobe did great individually once Shaq left, but he didn't win anything. That's why I'd challenge your assertion that he won without other all-stars, because it was only with all-star talent like Gasol, Bynum, and Odom (for some time) that he resumed his winning ways. The Lakers teams of the mid-2000s were atrocious.

I just think Kobe is quickly reaching the end and he sees his time to win being almost over. The recovery from this injury is going to aid all of this. I think at the end of the day when faced with the choice of having Lebron and letting him be the man to get another ring would win the day. No doubt he has a HUGE ego, but he is also very smart.
