just came across this video of Wilt at Kansas University. This video gives you an idea of just how gifted Wilt was. He'd be a monster in an era.

Agreed. Russell was a phenomenal athlete but Chamberlain was truly a force of nature. Chamberlain also didn't have the luxury of being surrounded by hall of fame talent (though he was on some great teams) and the same coach for his entire career.

he had no moves, he put the ball on the floor, his footwork was terrible, he lacked strength.

Could he have developed all that if he played in 2000? Probably

But if I played 57 Wilt v 97 Shaq, SHaq just destroys the guy.

No, they had the same ABILITY, not SKILL.

Shaqs moves in the post are light years head of Chamberlin.

Did you bother to watch Shaq's first 6 years? Please. This is why generational stuff is a pita. Don't you think today Wilt would be taking any center to frickin school as he gained same college/early pro experience as the others? In that vein don't you think MJ would have found a way to put it on James?

Lacked strength? Please tell me you're joking. There are dozens upon dozens of people, Chamberlain's peers, who marveled at his power. He was by far the strongest person in basketball during his time. Even when he was lean in college he was still very powerful. Once he got to the NBA he filled out big time and become even more powerful. I don't know why you are comparing 57' Wilt to 97' Shaq'. Wilt in 57' was only 21 and still in college, Shaq in 97' was 25' and already in his 5th NBA season. A comparison of 57' Wilt to 93' Shaq would be much more valid. Both the same age, both very powerful despite not being filled out completely, both a bit raw offensively (especially compared to what the would become in following seasons). Also, obviously 57' Wilt was not at his peak, not even close. Chamberlain during the 60's could not be stopped and Shaq would not be able to stop him either.

Not even close. Again, you are basing this off of Chamberlain's college years where he was basically just a freak athlete with a good fadeaway. Shaq was raw as hell in college and his first few years in the NBA as well. Chamberlain at his peak from 62'-67' would have dominate a 21 year old Shaquille O'neal.

Wilt had similar strength to Shaq. He abused his competition with brute strength just the same. By his Lakers years he was playing at about 315 lbs.

Numerous examples of Chamberlain's incredible strength

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwvdsi6gLl8

In this video you can see just how imposing Chamberlain was during his NBA career. As far as skill goes Wilt had just as much as Shaq. Shaq mainly used just a jump hook, sometimes he would use a drop step as well. When Wilt got to the NBA he had a terrific fallaway, an excellent hook shot, and a finger roll as well. Just like Shaq he could just overwhelm people with his strength as well.

Shaq had to learn moves inside and better skills because he played against guys his size that could play some defense.

No reason for Wilt to learn how to make the same moves for most of his career.

Plus what % of these blocks are goaltending? 905?

I don't think I'd say that's true. And to me a good case can be made for Shaq as the greatest player ever. Unfortunately he ate his way out of being considered that way by most people, plus he played in a time when centers were denigrated as being "just big". The fan in his era had no interest in efficiency, he just wanted to see someone fly. But Wilt probably had to take on more accomplished big men in his career than Shaq did.

The interesting thing with the NBA is Shaq might be the last of the true feared centers in the league. With the 3pt line and to some extent the hack-a-shaq technique employed against big guys, the NBA is definitely moving from a post first game to a post second. Era by era, Wilt was more dominant than Shaq, but if you took both in their prime, I think Shaq probably has little problem dominating Wilt. Wilt during his era only needed to do what he needed to do.... if there were defenders, he probably would have stepped up his game to counter it, but given what we know, I would be hard pressed to believe Shaq would lose. It is a size issue -- much like if you put the 1985 Bears OL against the 2012 Detroit DL, I think the DL will crush them based on size alone.

Wow. Great video. He looks bigger than Shaq and Ewing.

Wilt was just a phenomenal athlete. B&B often like to say there has never been a freak of nature like Lebron, but I believe Wilt was.

Wilt was a great athlete FOR HIS TIME. But look at those videos, the tallest guy on the opposing team was maybe 6' 4". If you are an agile 7-footer, you should easily be able to manhandle a 6'4" white dude in the era of the bounce pass and set shot.

This is simply a misconception that people like to repeat ad-nauseum. Wilt's career wasn't spent playing against nothing but 6'4" white guys. I wish people would stop saying that.

Hakeem was a full 3, maybe 4 inches shorter than Wilt. I think he'd have some struggles.
