Forward Glen Davis has decided to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, clearing the way for the Brooklyn Nets to sign the NBA's first openly gay player, Jason Collins to a 10-day contract, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Collins, who will be the first openly gay player in North American professional sports history, reached an agreement on a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

As Davis decided on Sunday to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, the Nets are moving on to Plan B – bringing Collins back into the NBA, sources said. Collins, in Los Angeles where the Nets play the Lakers on Sunday, plans to meet with Nets officials there soon, sources said.

After agreeing to a buyout with the Orlando Magic, Davis is expected to clear waivers at 5 p.m. on Sunday and will sign a deal for the rest of the season with his former Celtics coach, Doc Rivers, and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Collins revealed his sexuality in the spring, and had gone throughout the NBA preseason and regular season without a job offer. Once the Nets missed out on free agent Davis on Sunday, they moved to complete the process of signing Collins as a backup big man.

Collins, 35, has been out of the NBA since completing the 2012-'13 season with the Washington Wizards.

Collins played parts of seven years with the Nets between 2001-08, and his ex-teammate, Jason Kidd, now the Nets coach, has been advocate of signing him. Collins played with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce with the Boston Celtics.

You're just sticking it to Collins and the Nets.

I agree. Silver was definitely on top of this PR stunt.

He figures that by this time the Nets fans have been taking it in the ass so long that they're more capable of relating to Jason.

I think he just wanted to be the first to penetrate deep into the armor of the gay critics that say it will be very hard for play to take have a gay player on their team.

Everyone just needs to open up and accept it. There is no reason to keep fighting it.

Was it North who said Collins is good "going to the rim"?

He's not terrible, not even close. He's a very solid player who can help come playoff time.

So with Collins playing in a game, will reporters and media continue to make a big deal regarding Michael Sam? Collins was the first to declare (last year), and now he's the first to play. Michael Sam is no longer noteworthy. Or is he?

If that's the case, neither one of these guys are noteworthy. The barrier was broken over 35 years ago.

Jaw Breaker why do you want to silence the media when they are highlighting another major step in civil rights? The argument always seems to be "if you want to be accepted and be like everyone else you don't need special attention". It's because of the fact these groups are not or were not accepted that they/we get more press for some accomplishments. Let them have there time in the spotlight.

I think they've had their time in the spotlight, and now I'd like to think these teams/leagues can just move on and not worry about it anymore. It should be a non-issue going forward, but you know it won't be. Do you think Michael Sam wants it to be an ongoing story? The media will want the story to have legs, not him.

I disagree. This is still new. The LGBT community are still breaking down walls and you'll continue to hear about them until there is the belief by many that the playing field is level. Of course he wants the media coverage. He doesn't make the announcement if he didn't. That will give hope to some gay boy somewhere in the country that it is okay for him to play football and be open about his sexuality. That will also be the case with Hillary and women in another year. These a huge events in these communities that don't fade away with your typical news cycle.

It'll stop being newsworthy when there's a gay president.

Abraham Lincoln doesn't count? Eleanor Roosevelt got tired of sleeping with her cousin and decided to sleep with a woman.

Open gay players are nothing new in the NBA.
