If you were a fan and had tickets to Tuesdays Clippers home game? If you didn't have tickets would you still support the team?

Personally I would still go and I would still root for the team if I didn't have tickets. I would be a fan of the team and not the owner.

The only guy I've ever heard who is a fan of any owner is dan bernstein. Who the fuck roots for owners? I'd go to the game.

This is probably right. Wear some sort of shirt signifying team support not owner. As for protests by players certainly that would be big. Unfortunately, the only one hurt would be the network and employees of the stadium I would think. The tickets are sold already and the players do not get paid extra for playoffs anyway. Sterling already has all his money.

I would go to the game with a sign that supports the players and rips Sterling

I'd go with a sign that rips Larry Johnson and Charles Barkley and Dennis Rodman and Shaquille O'Neal and other NBA racists.

I wouldn't go. If I were a player, I wouldn't play. If I were an opposing player, I'd lose all respect for any established player that played for them in that game.

As a fan/Clipper I'd feel even more foolish given Sterling's past and, if I knew it, how I'd let myself be co-opted.

I flatly would find legal grounds to terminate my contract...or at least pr grounds that made it impossible for the team and league to try and enforce it.

Personally, I didn't go to White Sox games for years after '94 just because of Reinsdorf and his role in the work stoppage. Hell, I still have a new(old) hate of the Cubbies because of Madlock & their management's treatment of FA players of color.

Where's that "Are you proud of our country" thread now?

I completely agree with you when it comes to being a player but as a fan why does the owner matter?

Because he's the one I'm in privity of contract with. I'm paying him my money to go to his games. If I'm local, it's likely my tax revenue that lines his pockets. I'm just asking for fairness in what he/she does.

And he's ultimately the face of my franchise. I need to believe that he/she cares more than I do. Tom Benson even just occasionally wins that battle...

It's also why I'm not much of a sports fan these days.

And that my friend, is why I haven't been a Bear fan for over a quarter of a century. (Reinsdorf got lucky, I grew up & was doomed in the brief Veeck era  )

Just out of curiosity, which NFL team do you pull for? Hopefully not the Packers... ?

I actually had been a fan of both the White Sox & Cubs until the Wrigleys refused to pay Madlock(a then 2 time batting champ), badmouthed the hell out of him, talked about the ridiculous nature of higher contracts...and then paid Bobby Murcer more than Madlock even had been negotiating for. They had already sent Jenkins & Billy Williams packing and this was the last straw for my grandfather. He thought it was a shit organization destined to lose, so wtf.

As a 9-10 yr. old who revered his granddad, I agreed and hated the Cubbies for years thereafter.

That's a tough way to follow pro sports. I can't imagine Reinsdorf cares more about the White Sox than I do. Or Paul Konerko either. And I don't expect them to. The Sox are my team. They're Frank Coztansa's team. The Cubs are IMU's team and RPB's team. These players and owners are just temporary. When it comes down to it, we root for laundry.

I feel the same way. Hitler could be the owner of the Sox, Cubs, Bears or Bulls and I would still love them.

Before my time, I didnt know that. Not to be disrespectful, but those are all facts right? Not just rumors?

I mean if they really gave Murcer more than Madlock was asking, that's pretty ridiculous

Madlock was seen as a pain in the ass. I have no doubt there was some racial component to that viewpoint, but it's not like he was a revered player that everyone wanted, in spite of his hitting ability. At one time Murcer was seen as the next Mickey Mantle. That was well before he came to the Cubs but he was still a good player. And that was a time when people thought defense actually mattered.

I am too young to remember but didn't Madlock have drug issues? Or was that after he was gone to Pittsburgh or wherever?

Tough decision. I think I'd want to know what the players were doing, but I couldn't support the owner. It's all icky.

Your truly awesome story makes me sick with nostalgia. One of my earliest memories of sports is watching the Cubs with my Dad over aerial television and seeing Bobby Murcer hit a grand slam. I asked my dad if a grand slam meant the ball went all the way out of the park and he kicked me down the stairs and showered me with Hamm's Draft from the little keg kan.
