I think his emotions after last night showed why the Make-A-Wish involvement by sports organizations may be a bad idea. I think it is unfair to players to have to carry something like that around.

He was crying after the game because a little girl with cancer he had befriended died earlier that day.

Googled and read the espn piece on this. I am not seeing how him befriending the girl was a bad thing. Sure he played the game with a heavy heart but seemed it was good for everyone involved they spent time/emotion together.

Sending some autographed stuff or maybe taking a picture with someone won't have you as emotionally invested as spending time with someone will. If I were an owner I wouldn't want my players carrying around something like that. It's bad for business. A tragedy in Lamar Odom's life turned him into a crackhead.

Marrying Khloe Kardashian was certainly unfortunate. :P

Players need to see the reality of life and not just the fantasy world they live in. Too many people, not just atheletes, take things for granted. I applaud J.Wall for taking time for this girl and giving her something special as she faced death. Bad for buisness, who fucking cares.

Lamar Odom was always goofy as fuck. Phil just reeled it in for a few great years.

As an owner, you really can't tell your players not to do stuff like this. It would be a PR disaster if it got out.

I would discourage establishing a relationship with people like that. We all lose people that we are close too and getting close to a child that's going to die could really hurt some players mentally.

That's an incredibly insensitive point of view, and like I said, an owner would be more or less forced to sell their team if it came out they said something like that in an internal memo. It is much more important for humanity to have that kid befriended by a role model than to make sure your star PG doesn't have an off shooting nice for a game in December. C'mon man.

Or it could inspire them to take their game to another level.

He should be sad that he will never be as good as Evan Turner.

The guy did a sweet thing for a sick child...that's his personal choice, I don't think we can dicatate stuff like that for players...it's not like the "no motorcycle" clause in contracts, there's nothing negative about kindness

Nonsense. Owners should also make players give their kids up for adoptions and put no-marriage clauses in their contracts. Dont want anything like personal relationships distracting from on-court dominance.

This is different from family or friends. The NBA encourages these things and I know it helps with branding but I know a lot of players have probably broken down or were mentally off for a little while after similar experiences.

It would matter to me if I was an owner. A few bad games could be the difference between making the playoffs or sitting at home and Lamar Odom is the extreme of what could happen. It's an unnecessary distraction.

Lamar Odom didn't turn into a crackhead for befriending a kid with cancer though.

As an owner, I would be really happy to have a guy like Wall do what he did as the face of the franchise.

A death of someone he was close to caused him to go off the rails. I'm not disputing that it was a great thing to do but I think it can be an unnecessary distraction. Signing balls and giving away game jerseys used to be the norm.

Go off the rails?
He scored 26 points, his team won the game, and he got emotional because the interviewer brought it up twice.
What are you even talking about?

I read what you wrote, and I think your POV on this issue is strange.
Whatever, I don't really care one way or the other.
Carry on.
