Why would a coach get a T based on a 3 second video where the ref clearly makes the gesture that the ball was tipped away?

If you can read...Thomas leaves his feet to elevate for the shot, but the ball does not leave his hands before he lands. The referee behind the play makes the signal that the ball was tipped, but while it may have been touched as Thomas was on his way up for the shot, he maintained possession, so a travel should have been called right there.

It wasn’t, so play continued — and because it did, Thomas (legally in the officials’ eyes) initiated the dribble once again.

oh come on. the play is hard to tell on replay. the initial call doesnt mean anything when you have that clear of a replay on it and either way you still cant really tell. it looked like it was knocked away but he held onto it barely. call could have gone either way.

for the most part nba refs do a good job. they do have elastic play calling, and i think its because there isnt any other way to do it. with basketball the same plays are called both fouls and fine all the time. what they do is try to call the game in favor of the team that is playing better. if you watch enough basketball you see it all the time. rookies dont get calls. teams on a roll at the end of the game do get calls. teams acting like jackasses usually dont win. teams not giving effort dont get calls either, even when theres a clear foul.

its just the way the game is, but i kinda like it. the players not only have to play the game, but the refs too. you can bully them, you can sweet talk, anything will work as long as you convince them you are a good guy. the nba lets their refs do their job. they let the players say whatever they want as soon as they retire from playing. they know its pure entertainment, the whole league has a laid back "its all good" vibe to it which is very different than any other sport. football makes you excited to watch if youre not a bears fan, baseball makes you want to pass out, and hockey makes you excited too, but the nba is just pure fun. all aspects of their business.
