Joey Votto and the Reds are close to a long-term contract extension. Votto confirmed a report by mlbtraderumors.com

Reds, Joey Votto Nearing Extension

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [April 2 at 12:14pm CST]

12:14pm: Votto confirmed to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer that an extension is close. "I can't comment till it's done. You'll have to ask Walt [Jocketty, the GM]. It's a gray area" (Twitter link).

11:40am: Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols won't be the only first basemen to cash in with historic contracts this offseason. Joey Votto and the Reds are nearing an extension that will keep the first baseman in Cincinnati for a long time, MLBTR's Tim Dierkes and Ben Nicholson-Smith have learned. Dan Lozano of Icon Sports Group represents Votto.

Terms of the deal are not known, but it wouldn't be surprising if the total contract value surpasses $200MM. Votto will earn a total of $26.5MM through 2013 on the extension he signed last winter. I suggested in January that an additional $161MM could be enough to keep Votto in place long-term. Though not directly related, the Dodgers' sale price of $2.15 billion can't have hurt Votto's leverage.

Votto, the 2010 NL MVP, has evolved into one of the game's elite players since debuting in 2007. He followed up his MVP season with a .309/.416/.531 line, 29 homers and 40 doubles. The 28-year-old has been a seven win player each of the past two seasons, according to FanGraphs' version of wins above replacement.

Just four deals in MLB history have surpassed the $200MM mark. Prince Fielder, Alex Rodriguez (twice) and fellow Lozano client Albert Pujols make up the select group.

Good let the Reds hamstring themselves with a huge contract. That works.

I don't see how they can give him that contract and have any other pieces. The only way is to really raise the payroll, the Brewers couldn't do it, and I don't see how they can.

What contract? kujoe just reposted the quote from Votto I posted above.

The rest is just speculation by that author that he wouldn't be surprised if the total contract value is in excess of $200M. Many have speculated as much, but frankly, I would be very surprised if the combined old and new contracts exceed 8 years in length and/or $175 million.

I'm sure we will hear something conrete by close of day.

Your probably right about for a least one big piece - the Reds wouldn't be able to afford a long term contract for Brandon Phillips after this year if the Votto deal is $20M+ per year.

How do they ever afford any pitching?

I would love for these type of markets to be able to sign these type of players, but I just can't see where it makes sense when your payroll is around $75 million and you are going to pay 1 guy 20 million of it.

Cueto, Bailey, Latos and Marshall are signed for several years. Leake and Bailey won't demand top dollar. They've got some other good role picthers like Ondrusek, Bray and Massett.

Jay Bruce is signed for several years as well and they have rookies at SS and catcher. The plan could work . . . but you can't resign BP. On the flip side he'll turn 32 next season.

Looks like I was wrong on Phillips.

Quote:
The Cincinnati Reds have locked up another key offensive player to a long-term contract.

A week after signing first baseman Joey Votto to a massive extension, the Reds agreed to a six-year, $72.5 million contract with second baseman Brandon Phillips, sources told ESPN's Jim Bowden.

Phillips signed a four-year, $27 million deal before the 2008 season that had a $12 million option for 2012. This new contract replaces that one and goes through 2017.

Phillips, who will turn 31 in June, has hit at least 17 home runs in each of the last six seasons. In 2011, he hit a career-best .300 with 18 homers and 82 RBIs.

Serious question NSJ...really not being a dick here.

Now that they've locked up two of their stars, will fans start showing up? Last night's attendance was brutal (less than 20,000 if memory serves)...seems bad for a game with a division rival in the first week of the season.

Attendance is brutal. It's a great park and it's a shame that the numbers have been so low. I go to 10 games a year and always have 2-4 kids with me.

I think if they win, the fans will show up, but it's brutal for a team that has legit veterans and emerging stars to have to deal with significant attendance issues.

It was 50 degrees with 20 mph winds. I had four layers on gloves and a hat. Still would have like to see more people there.
