well, one difference would be that you can overrun first base, so you don't have to slow down as you approch the bag as you would with 2nd or 3rd base...

The study is head first vs. feet first sliding...not head first vs. running to and stopping or running through the base.

I've never heard that feet first slide is faster than a head first slide. The debate always is running thru 1st base, or sliding into first. I still think running thru the 1st base is faster
