At one point I thought it would be Soto, but it looks like Votto is just too strong.

What makes Votto a better candidate?

Soto not only has the hitting stats, but being a rookie catcher and working with this staff the way he has for a successful team makes him the ROY to me.

Too strong? The numbers are almost identical with Soto leading in everything meaningful except for batting average (and that's only 2 points) with 5 less games.
The fact that Soto is a catcher and an All-Star starter (the only rookie catcher to EVER do that) makes this his award easily.

I'm not going to make the same mistake twice: Soto

Please explain what numbers above make Votto "too strong" over Soto? Do we not take into account defense / position & in Soto's case, the performance of "his" pitching staff?

Stupid Post!

If does not end up being Soto, something is seriously wrong.

Where have you gone Joe Morgan?

It's Geo's award, but you have the wrong Reds' rookie as the only other real challenger. It's Edison Volquez.

I'm not following you, Musty. Please help me understand. . .

What would your response be to someone who suggested that your ROY candidate was wrong and proposed Youkilis or Pedroia instead?

Volquez ain't no Rookie.

Damn, you're right NSJ. :?
I didn't realize he exceeded his 50 innings (by like 30 !!!)

I blame Karl Rove for disseminating innacurate information regarding his candidacy.

Soto has fewer at bats, but still MORE home runs and runs batted in, a higher on base percentage and a higher slugging percentage. Plus, he plays a much tougher defensive position and plays it well. No doubt Soto wins it.

As a White Sox fan, I am proud to say that Soto gets my NL RoY vote.

A ROY catcher is a HUGE asset, but I like the runner-up's attitude. I think he'll have a better season than last.

Joey Votto wrote:
“My mindset this year is more team-oriented,” Votto said. “Last year, I was concentrating on my personal things, trying to get established as a major leaguer. This year, I’m concentrating on being a better Cincinnati Red, a better teammate. We’ve got to do better this year.”

“Your first year you just want to go from the beginning to the end. I think a lot of young players want to overcome that first year. It’s such a huge challenge to make the team and stay with major league team throughout the year. I did that last and did it successfully I thought.

“This year, I want to play well because I know I’m an important part of the team. But I want to play well and create wins. That doesn’t mean every time I take a cut good things are going to happen. I need my teammates to pick me up. I want to pick up my teammates."

The boys still cherish your Ken Griffey rookie cards. Thanks, Scott.

I agree NSJ.

It's upsetting that, according to Pinella, Soto came to camp out of shape. Seems he spent the winter celebrating his Rookie of the Year Honors.

Bob Brenly in part blamed Soto's participation in the World Baseball Classic for being out of shape and performance this year.

Votto is fun to watch. He's leading the league in batting and is in the top 10 in RBIs and slugging.
