Jake is a better pitcher, so you offer him the deal he is worth, first of all.

I'm sure a lot of inferior pitchers would have taken a contract that Arrieta declined. Jake got $75M for 3 and will end up getting more than the $120M the Cubs offered over those same years. He will not have 'taken less.'

i thought darvish could get 150M over 6 if he hits all incentives. arrieta maxes out 125/5?

Jake's is a max of 5 years, $135M, and only $10M of that is based on finishing in the Top X of Cy Young voting in 2021 and 2022. (The other $10M above guaranteed is just based on games started.) And there is a good chance that he just opts out of 2021 and 2022 and signs another 3-4 year contract that jumps the total value of the 3 year $75M contract and the second contract to over $150M or $160M.

Jake went off on his team today after the game. Said they're the worst in doing defensive shifts. Meaning they don't do it at all. He said 'copy the best' which I guess means Maddon/Cubs.
