Quote:
The Cleveland Indians fell to the Cincinnati Reds 7-4 on Tuesday night, giving up all seven runs in the final inning of play.

The issue in the top of the ninth for the Indians can be directed back, nearly entirely, to pitching. But it’s not because manager Terry Francona left reliever Cody Allen in the game too long — well, maybe he did. Allen threw only 19 strikes in 31 pitches and gave up three runs.

The problem was that Francona stumbled when making the call to the bullpen.

Yes, seriously.

With two outs, Francona finally made the call to finally replace Allen and hopefully get out of the inning. Soon after he got pitching coach Carl Willis on the phone, pitcher Dan Otero came running to the mound.

Up comes Reds star Joey Votto — who then hit a three-run RBI double off Otero right on cue to put them up by two. Eugenio Suarez hit Votto in just two batters later, too, giving the Reds the three-run lead and eventually the win.

So why did Otero get the nod? Well, apparently he didn’t.

According to The Athletic’s Zach Meisel, Francona told Willis to call down for “OP” on the bullpen phone, meaning Oliver Perez. Willis, though, heard OT, and made the call for Otero to enter the game.

Quote:
Why Dan Otero instead of Oliver Perez in the ninth? Terry Francona told Carl Willis to call for “OP” on the bullpen phone. Willis thought he said “OT.” When Otero entered, Francona was surprised. Can’t make this stuff up.

Ending to the A's-Astros game last night. I'd expect this from the White Sox.

Chris Sale's 109th pitch was 98 mph. His 110th was 97. Dude's a freak.

The Red Sox got RHP Nathan Eovaldi for LHP Jalen Beeks.

Eovaldi is having a good year but he's an injury waiting to happen. Beeks is another Arkansas arm who got a lot better in pro ball.

The Rockies acquired RHP Seunghwan Oh from the Blue Jays for 1B Sean Bouchard and 1B Chad Spanberger.

Solid return. Spanberger is from downstate (Granite City HS) and went to Arkansas. He’s s a guy I completely “missed” on in HS. I saw him in the fall and he was embarrassingly over matched by velocity. Swung thru every fastball in the zone. I didn’t even bother to see him in the spring. I figured he didn’t have a chance to stay at Arkansas and I’d eventually see him at a JC. I give him credit. He turned himself into a dangerous hitter.

Thoughts on the Nationals? This team is a disaster. With 2 days before the deadline, they should probably start considering a fire sale. They most likely lose Harper at the end of the season. Martinez should get fired. Hell, I would listen to calls for Max as well.

The Rays are getting as bad as the A’s at churning players. This is the first year Billy Beane has hung onto guys and is actually winning. You can’t win when you’re constantly moving guys in and out of the clubhouse.

Now the Rays move Archer for Meadows and Glasnow.

Don’t get too comfortable fellas. You’ll get shipped out in the next year or so.

The Red Sox announced that they’ve placed left-hander Chris Sale on the disabled list, retroactive to July 28, with inflammation in his pitching shoulder.

Pittsburgh was left for dead a month ago.

It's amazing they went on such a run that they became fucking BUYERS at the trade deadline. Theyre something like 3 games back of the 2nd wild card spot (Arizona). Fucked up.

Dodgers were up 4 to 2 on the Brewers in the 8th and left their reliever in while he clearly did not have it to allow the Brewers to tie the game up at 4. Jensen who hasnt pitched in a few days was warmed up in the pen, but they did not go to him. Fucking idiots

Just saw one of the stupidest things ever in a major league game. Cardinals at bat with a runner on first and 2 outs. Rockies pitcher strikes out Cardinal batter but it is a drop third strike right in front of the catcher. The batter takes off for 1st and the runner at 1st takes off for 2nd. Instead of just throwing the ball to first for the easy third out of the inning the catcher flings the ball to 2nd base and there is no one even close to the base and the ball goes into center field. The Cardinals could not make them pay for such a stupid error...but still one the dumbest plays I have ever seen.

That is probably reflexive or he forgot how many outs.

If there were 0 or 1 out, the drop third wouldn't be in play.
