Is it really, though? They're a big name in a big city with a big payroll. But....they had Jason Heyward in their lineup. And he was batting 6th! Kershaw can't pitch in the playoffs. Lance Lynn can't pitch at all.

to me, yes...the starting pitching was a question mark. the hitting was not. having both fail is not the mark of a 100 win club. it's not one organ that failed the body, multiple organs. yeah, heywood seemed a successful reclamation project - until the playoffs. add in the fact that the dodgers have been murdering arizona the past few seasons...getting swept was shocking.

Dodgers have 2 MVP type players in Betts and Freeman. Combined 1-21 (infield single).

I still say that Castellanos was the one that got away on both sides of town . Cubs should’ve locked him up when they had the chance and when they didnt the Sox shouldve signed him. He was the long term answer for both teams in the outfield.

Castellanos hitting dingers will forever be at least a little funny.

If you're a baseball fan its hard to dislike the Phillies.

Fuck Texas, go NL!

The failed Castellanos re-signing was in the Daddy Rickett's "I'm Poor" era, also when they gave away Darvish for nothing.

it was murph's fault. he said on the air back then he had insider info from people he knew over at the cubs that they would sign him. he wasn't suppose to make that public.

once the cubs found out about that, the brass went livid that the plans to resign him were leaked. and that ended any chance of keeping him a cub as the management who favored darvish would win out claiming they never leaked.

Oh I agree. Fuck the fanbase and fuck the Eagles. But the Phillies are a good, fun team. Easy to root for. I wish the Sox could even be a fraction of what they are.

In the NL it's going to be the Phillies. They've been on a mission all year to get back to the WS and this time WIN IT! You could see in the series vs the Braves they were just waiting to play the Braves in the playoffs.

In the AL, it's hard to go against the Astros BUT it seems like it's the Phillies year so the Rangers may win that series. Logically, using my head, I have to say Astros. But baseball is such an esoteric game -

(I wrote about that in this post here : viewtopic.php?f=92&t=130801)

that it seems like it's the phillies year. and i think the only way the phillies win the WS is if they don't play the Astros. Because what does Philly really have thats any different than last year's WS team? Maybe Castellanos is hitting while he did not last year? But Schwarber and JT are not hitting like they were last year to make up for Castellanos WS slump last year.

So the AL is very hard to call. Do you call it logically - Astros, or supernaturally - Rangers.

I just get that baseball feeling it's the Phillies year and the Rangers will pull it out in the AL and end up losing to the Phils.

Astros starting pitching seems weak, like girl or Ukraine....starting pitching rotation anchored by a 40 year old this late into a season is not the best look. Tho I guess Verlander doesn't usually shit the bed in the post-season until the WS. And by then it might not matter if they get nothing but innings from JV--it'll probably come down to bullpens and I think that might be advantage Astros.

When Detroit put Verlander on the trade block, I thought JV let it be known that Chicago was among his preferred trade destinations--or more likely his woman's preferred landing spot. Upton born and raised across the lake in one of those lake Michigan resort-ish towns. Chicago's practically a hometown for folks from that part of Michigan.

Verlander's numbers at that trade deadline were inflated by getting rocked against the Indians a couple times earlier in the season; Indians were often a nemesis for Verlander during his time with Detroit. But iirc Verlander coming off either Cy Young win or top 3 in cy young voting and if you dropped the horrific Cleveland starts from earlier in the season Verlander's numbers going into that trade deadline were pretty much in-line with what he'd done the year prior

The top teams have been crying about the playoff format since the three division winner & one wild card format (which I happen to think is the best). I'm tired of it. If you can't beat the team you're facing, you don't deserve to advance.

To finish out the season, Dodgers and Braves had a about a week and half with nothing to play for, and Baltimore, a week. Astros were grinding until the last day.

They've made 162 not mean much, so what's the point of 162? Go 120. Have a giant year end tournament. Plenty of time for 5 best of 7s.

I tend to agree. If they're going to expand the playoffs, they should do so at the expense of the regular season, but that will never happen.

I also looked at the standings, under the old LCS system, Atlanta and Baltimore still would have been able to throttle down over the last week of the season and LA would have missed the playoffs despite winning 100 games.

There's really not much difference between winning 90 or winning 100. Dodgers being booted wasn't surprising. They were depleted. Getting swept is somewhat surprising.

The rules changes are false hope. Sport still dying without major changes.

What a great pitching sequence to aLvarez. I'm convinced Montgomery wasted a 2-2 pitch just to punch him out on the breaker on 3-2.

I give him a pass. He probably thought he was standing on the bag when that lead foot went to towards 3rd.

Very soulful win for my Arrangers. Montgomery was brilliant.
