I want to see the MLB owners have the balls to cancel the season. I don't think they do.

As Tom Glavine said, the players will be blamed by the public no matter what. Scherzer isn't gonna win the fans over to pressure the owners. For every generous Adam Wainwright, there's a Blake Snell.

Surely if magically the financial situation changed to the owners favor after they agreed to the first deal and the players came back and asked for more, the owners would happily renegotiate.

It's hard to tell if this is really about this (half) season or if it's actually about the expiring CBA and the owners figuring it may as well start being dealt with now.

Im sure that some owners are itching to just lock out the players now, and see this as an excuse. These are likely the same owners who want to throw out the minor leagues and redesign them, and probably have teams that are not going to be competitive for a few years.

That's called revenue sharing. The players refuse.

Again, how can you trust the owners when they refuse to show the books..

That's part of revenue sharing. The NFL and NBA have been able to figure it out. It's slightly harder in MLB because regional tv deals matter much more but that's not really that hard to get figured out.

It was with the idea that fans would come eventually, but who cares.

Owners went to players to negotiate a different agreement where players would make less than their guaranteed contract. The players agreed.

Now that the situation changed again, the owners expect to the players to concede again.

If owners want a season, they can take the hit this season and lose money.

If they don't, they can cancel the season.

But it's on them.

I don't think so, this time. If the players continue this kind of messaging, they'll be fine.

But as has been said, they need to be open for revenue sharing, salary cap, and salary floor. It still won't be without the onwers hiding money, but it would be a lot better than what we have now.

To JORR's question, i think both sides are leveraging this for the next CBA.

There's always a segment that will decry the greedy players and come to the defense of the billionaire owner.

I think it's just reality that owners aren't going to choose to lose more money so there is a season. The players can only make money on any games played.

I don't get it in this situation. Everyone is going to lose money. The players agreed to a paycut. The owners can lose $ too.

I wonder if players will take it upon themselves to play 'sandlot' type games at Spring training facilities or something? I'd still watch that.

I actually feel for neither of them. They are all making a lot of money fighting over a giant pie that happens to be cut smaller for all due to this. The owners messed up by discussing this too soon as far as i see it.

The only paycut was that there would be less games for the players. I don't know why the owners didn't expect no fans to be in attendance though.

Mike, that is the point. The players already agreed to a smaller pie and now the owners want to make the players' part of the pie even smaller.

MLB is actually paying minor leaguers, if I am not mistaken.

I agree with Mike, Frank, and BRick above. I realize that the owners are weasels, but the players are, too. And, just as in 1994, they're not going to win the support of most fans.

I get that the owners more or less reneged. But I'm sick of the players taking their case to the fans. Complain to the fans about not playing, not about not making bank.

I'm just being a crab-ass. I just want to see a season.

Oakland just stopped paying their minor leaguers.

Angels will soon as well.

Sox and Cubs I think are paying them through next month.

Sign me up for that as well. That would be cool.

One of these days, some enterprising group of players is gonna find some investors and start a rival league.

Today is a little different than 1994, tommy. Its not simply "Players want more $!"

I can't fault the players for wanting money when they are going to have to live in hotels/away from family, eat at certain places, not take Uber or taxis, only be allowed to go certain places, have to sit in empty stands rather than the dugout, etc. I think MANY of them want to play and if was as simple as play or not, games would start tomorrow. But there are a lot of logistics and things that need to be worked out, and yes MANY of these ballplayers are filthy rich but they would be embarking on a season that is like no other in history.

Bah! That sucks. Thank you for this information which I could somehow not find last night.

Now that's some bullshit right there. This is also why I can't stand the players union; they don't do a lot for the minors. Once you make it to AA, you should be able to make a living.

That will be very difficult as long as thy have their anti-trust exemption...which is why it needs to be killed...among other reasons.

For the players, messaging is critical.....if they manage this carefully, they can have the upper hand here. Yes, there's greed with them, but they have to remain very vocal that the books are closed and the total revenue is buried deep. As much as the players piss me off, there's several Jerry's that are far worse.
