I answered this for you already. Because its the most noteworthy thing the Cubs have done so far this offseason.

They hired a manager. Kind of a big deal. What's your next stupid statement?

Truth hurts, huh? Kinda speaks for itself when a mascot is bigger news than the new manager now doesn't it?

Didn't disappoint.

Is there more media coverage over the new mascot, or was there more media coverage over the Renteria hire?

Did the new manager hire give the sports talkers fodder for a full week? Were local news/sports affiliates in cities big and small carrying stories about Renteria? Did the Cubs have to issue a press release asking people to stop talking about and making fun of their manager hire? Nope.

Seems to me the one who is ignoring this is being stupid.

I agree with you. Renteria has less charisma than Clark.

Even if the Cubs signed Cano the Clark mascot would get more media coverage. Pretty simple to figure out why.

How much do you think the consultant billed for Clark?
This seems like it was done by a lesser Ricketts pro bono.

Maybe they make Todd dress up as Clark.

It's news because people actually care about the Cubs.

I didn't even know the White Sox had a mascot until I saw Frank's wedding pictures.

Maybe the Cubs should have a spider as a mascot. That would be creative - nonsensical, but, hey, creative.

You said that it looks like the Cubs just went to a costume store and bought a Bear costume

That is exactly what the Suns did.

From wiki:
Quote:
The Suns Gorilla is one of the more famous mascots in the NBA. For the first eleven seasons of their existence in the NBA, the Suns had no official mascot. An early attempt was made involving a sunflower costume, but it never caught on.[24] In the winter of 1980, a singing telegram (sent by James Oberhaus, a loyal fan) named Henry Rojas from Eastern Onion Telegram service was sent to the arena in a gorilla costume. Security saw him and suggested to him to stay for a while to entertain the fans during the breaks. He kept coming to games until officially invited to be the Suns' mascot.

See, that's kinda cool.

The worst NBA mascot is the Utah Jazz bear, whose name is "Bear." Fuckin' Mormons are creative enough to invent a religion where you have to wear a magic onesie to go to heaven and be given your own planet to be the god of after you die, and they can't come up with a better name for a mascot than "Bear"?

I prefer George Custer. It reminds people of the Cubs rich history. They played their first game right around the time he played his last. No other historic figure says CUBS like that guy!

A heritage national franchise introduces their 1st ever mascot. Very easy thing to put at the end of a sports broadcast for local broadcasts nationwide. Easy to ridicule for "cool" websites to show how "clever" and "witty" they are.

I dont think any mascots are creative, but by your standards the Phoenix Gorilla and Clark are equal.

Both are just generic animal costumes with half the team's uniform.

And Southpaw is a rip off apparently, so I guess that's not creative.

I just think the Cubs are an easy target and that is why it's a national story.

I dont really care much about any of it.

No. If it was the Phoenix Gorillas then it would be equal. Read my whole point next time.

Are you seriously saying that Southpaw is a ripoff of a wall in Boston? I must have missed something here.

I don't think Southpaw is an intentional ripoff of Wally or the Phanatic. I think someone just said "I dunno, make a bright furry thing" and voila.

No, I read your backtracking. Originally it was that the costume was generic. Then I brought up the Suns and you changed it.

But yeah, I dont get much into mascot creativity discussions

Clark can be the worst, most uncreative mascot ever. That's fine.

I just enjoy pointing out hypocrisy.

Keep on saying you don't care.

Once again, you agree with me that it isn't creative, so I don't know what your point is here.

If you really don't care, you would say "Yeah, he's right, let's talk about something else". Instead, you are arguing semantic points on timelines of reasons I gave for it not being creative, when you agree it isn't creative!

That is not close to accurate.

And no, not caring does not = Boilermaker Rick is right.

Clark is the worst mascot ever and the Cubs are a laughingstock.

My point is, you contradicted yourself.

I dont think any mascot really qualifies as creative. But under the Boilermaker Rick rules, Clark should be equal to Southpaw and the Gorilla, from a creative standpoint

So, no answer, then.

If you asked me what Detroit Lions mascot was, I'd guess it was a lion. I don't even know if they have one. But, I'd still go with "it's a lion" or "a guy dressed in a lion costume". I would not consider it creative and I would not care.

So, why does it matter if it's creative?

Yeah, the point of vacations is to be fun
The point of movies is to be interesting

The point of mascots is to make kids smile

I would think if BRick really didn't care as much as he says RPB does, then by definition of caring less he'd just let it go without responding. Seeing as that's clearly not the case, though, that will not happen ... which is fine, the more exchanges go back and forth, the greater the chances that something intresting might be said, so that's nice.

It's one of those questions where "Because it should be" is a valid answer. Do we really need to start discussing the merits of effective imagery?
