It's not. Owners crying poor because COVID happened and cut revenue to just $3 billion doesn't move me.

You're wrong, this lockout is completely contrived and an attempt to break the union.

That's what every lockout is, right?

The players were dicks in 2020. The owners and Manfred are getting their revenge now.

Fuck everyone.

I don’t care if the players get a lousy deal any more than I care if the owners get a lousy deal. I think the owners have the wherewithal to hold out longer for a deal they like, so I want to just get to whatever eventuality won’t cost the Sox the 2022 WS as soon as possible.

How "abused" Kris Bryant was by the system he's still made 60+ million, and only 29 going into free agency.

Not shockingly in nearly every one of these situations, I tend to support the owners. But as I think about this situation, I am fully on the players’ side. The simple fact is league revenues have generally gone up while salaries have not. There are many teams that are not even trying to win.

The negotiations are a joke though because neither is proposing changes that will make the necessary changes. They have to move to a model akin to the NFL with player salaries tied to revenue, floors and caps on team payrolls, and voidable contract that have a guaranteed component.

The players have the best deal in sports already. No salary cap. Huge salaries they divide to the veterans by choice.

If the owners are keeping too much money then share revenue with them. That works for every other American sports league.

Most of the things you mention are thins the union would never concede. They will not give back guaranteed contracts, allow a salary cap or any free agency relief.

If they get a guaranteed percentage of revenue, it seems like a great deal to me especially as they claim league revenues are $10B and growing. They are trying to make the existing system better, but without a salary floor, you will never get the Pirates to spend money.

The hell with getting them to spend money. You can't get them to not pocket their revenues and slashing payroll.

If like the NFL there weren't full guaranteed contracts it would be a much better game. Dead weight could be trimmed, and money recirculated to deserving players. Most players now making big money it's up for debate if they really care. The more the players have got in MLB the more the game has deteriorated. Player salary apologists here and on the Score don't really represent baseball fans as a whole.

Revenue sharing solves that.

Is revenue sharing actually on the table or is this a Model UN, MLB edition thing?

I don’t think either side actually wants that. Players want more money, owners want more money. Find a way to split the growing pot (i.e., expanded playoffs) and boom, deal. Book it.

And that was my point earlier, both sides are negotiating based off the prior contract rather than seeing the bigger picture. The players do not want to give MLB more revenues (ie 14 team playoffs) because they have no incentive to grow league revenues. The owners have no incentive to force the Pirates to build a competitive team. Sharing revenues with a floor/cap solves many of the issues.

I think that’d invite disclosure the owners don’t want to provide and more importantly, a cap, which the players would never agree to.

For shits and giggles, players should ask if the owners would want revenue sharing w/independent down in the weeds forensic audits?

Owners- "Not that kind of revenue sharing."

I no longer care. If they don't have a season I don't give a shit. Cubs are going to suck because Ricktts is still butthurt his Marquee network got booed a few years ago at cubs convention. So he has to take it out on the fans by not trying to win. Petty shit.

Well this gives me more time for my roadtrip. I wanted to visit some ballparks though but will take those off the list now.

There is a cap in everything but name, players salaries have dropped for 4 consecutive years while profits have exploded. The owners have zero incentive to have a cap and floor. It is working fine for them.

They have no choice but to negotiate off of the prior contract. These two sides don't trust each other enough to try and remake the game together. The players' position actually seems fairly modest. I thought for sure they were going to try and eliminate the six year waiting period for free agency, but they seem resigned to leaving it in place and settling for a bonus pool.
