I think the Reds will be in the wild card hunt til the last week of the season.

Fair enough...

...I'm not saying it's not possible...stranger things have happened, and the way the Cards have been playing the last week, they certainly are leaving the door wide open. I just have a feeling that at the end of the season, the Cards will be in first by a comfortable margin.

I agree with Arroyo. Cards have been there. Reds have not . . . in a long time.

Cincinnati has not been in first place this deep into a season since June 8, 2006. “The Cards have been in the playoffs,” Arroyo (3-2) said. “They’re not panicking. It’s not a big deal for them. It’s a bigger deal for us.”

The Cards have proven that they are a pretty viable team. The Reds have not. Maybe they make the playoffs, but I'm not buying it at this point.

He wasn't a manager in 1981.

Well it would be certainly tough for him to see one today as a player now wouldn't it?

Particularly when you are leading 9-3 in the ninth and lose 10-9. I'm sick and tired of giving up 7 runs in the ninth to lose by one.

Without Volquez and Chapman having thrown a pitch this season, I didn't expect the Reds to have the fourth best record in the majors after 1/3rd of the season.

I'm guessing Jose Macias or Nefei Perez were not available:

Quote:
Free agent OF Gary Matthews Jr., Reds near a deal

Gary Matthews Jr. and the Cincinnati Reds are close to a deal, a week after the New York Mets released the former All-Star.

Matthews would likely get a minor league contract. He hit .190 with one RBI in 58 at-bats with the Mets.

Cincinnati would be Matthews’ eighth team. Reds manager Dusty Baker is close friends with Matthews’ father, who also was an All-Star outfielder.

Baker did not address the report following Cincinnati’s 6-4 win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday night. A team spokesman said only that Matthews had not yet signed with the club.

The 35-year-old Matthews is a career .257 hitter with 108 home runs and 484 RBIs with San Diego, the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Texas, the Los Angeles Angels and the Mets.

Matthews was an All-Star in 2006 with Texas. The switch-hitting center fielder signed with the Angels before the 2007 season, and was traded to the Mets for pitcher Brian Stokes(notes) last season. The Angels agreed to pay $21.5 million of the $23.5 million remaining on his $50 million, five-year contract.

The Mets acquired Matthews while waiting for injured All-Star center fielder Carlos Beltran(notes) to return. Matthews started on opening day and got two hits for the Mets, but Angel Pagan(notes) wound up getting the majority of playing time.

The Reds have been a surprise this season, and went into Monday night’s game at Oakland in second place in the NL Central.

Man that 50 million dollar deal that he signed with the Angels was some bad paper. Was he one of the last of the completely overblown contracts from obvious juicers?

 point taken...but is Soriano on the juice or does he just always feast on mediocre pitching and has become more injury prone as he has gotten older. I guess its 6 of one and a half dozen of the other. For what its worth he is actually having a surprisingly decent year too bad the Cubs suck in so many other important places.

Well, as to be expected for a Dusty Baker led crew, things begin to fall apart in August. September ought to be fun for Cincy fans as they wither to second place in the division and out of WC contention.
They got the crap kicked out of them by the Birds.
STL has two games in hand by the way, and a ton of games against Chicago to win.
