George spends a lot of money but Torre hasn't had a solid rotation in years. Great hitting can only take you so far.

And while I agree with you, I also believe that the notions of major league pitching coaches and their percieved contributions, are wildly overrated. Over the long term, someone please show me evidence of pitching coaching genius? Leo Mazzone? One WS title with pitchers who made their living on the black edges of the plate? Earl Weaver? One title and a manager who didn't win when his hitters weren't hitting HRs left and right? Roger Craig? The master of the splitter whose pupils left the league w/in 2,3-4 yrs. w/elbow trouble? LaRussa,...please, yet another master of regular season consistency, but one title with the original kings of steroids and another with what...their progeny?

I firmly believe the best pitching(and baseball) coaches are in little/pony leagues who teach kids proper mechanics, but more importantly who have kids blessed with a natural gift that won't be wasted on a LL/Texas HS/CWS title, or allowed to learn a curve ball at 11-12.

sure everybody wants to win the WS and probably expects to contend for a playoff spot, but nobody ever should honestly just sit back and say "ho hum, we spent X amount of dollars or we have this guy this guy and this guy we're gonna win it all for sure!" the cubs had a terribly dissapointing end to thier year, but id hardly call thier year a failure. nor would i say that about the 2005 astros, the 2006 bears, the 2006 tigers, etc.

i dont care if its the yankees, the royals, or the pirates. its incredibly difficult to win the world series and if your club/ownership/whoever goes into spring training just "expecting" to at the very least make the Series, they're either the most concieted or the most igorant motherfucker in all of sports.

Why don't you people believe he should be fired? If you failed at your job for seven straight years, would you still have it?

Sorry but thats the type of arrogant fucking comment that makes all of us hate Yankees fans. Making the playoffs all those years is actually a pretty good accomplishment, despite payroll. Believe it or not, the Yankees are not entitled to a WS berth or championship, they have to earn it, and to hold them to that type of standard is just stupid and arrogant, despite all the money they throw at the team. Like other people on this thread have pointed out, spending money wisely is much much better than spending alot of it. Untill they improve very greatly as an organization, dont expect many more trophys coming up.

correctamundo. the only thing the yanks are entitled to is that they get to play 162 games and have just as much chance at winning than everyother MLB. that, and hatred from fans because of the way they comport themselves.

Change Ignorant to Arrogant, and it's Steinbrenner.

Hate is such a poisonous emotion.

Let us not confuse expectation and hope with a sense of entitlement. I don't believe I have ever stated that the glorious Yankees are automatically entitled to a World Series berth. I am on record as congratulating the Cleveland Indians for being the better team in this Series. Believe it or not, I congratulated a few of my Red Sox friends in 2004 for their team's efforts.

However, when one grows up rooting for the greatest and richest franchise in the history of sports, one's expectations at the beginning of a season are, indeed, that a World Series trophy will be earned at the conclusion of that season. I envy fans that can take solace in a "good effort" from their club, or who can smile and say "You know, we almost won that divisional series. Great strides from last year." Alas, that is just not a realistic emotion for the fan base in New York.

Its gonna get worse before it gets better. I think the Yankees go 80-82 next year without Torre Posasa Arod and Rivera

I'm starting to believe that if Mr. Steinbrenner was going to fire him, he would have done it already. Or maybe I'm just remembering the Mr. Steinbrenner from the Billy Martin melodramas.

Boss to sit down with Torre in Florida

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Yankees put off their meetings on Joe Torre's future until next week.

The meetings are likely to start Monday night or Tuesday, and they probably will be held at the team's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla.
Torre will not be asked to attend the start of the session, when owner George Steinbrenner, his sons and top aides will discuss whether to bring the manager back for a 13th season — which would be the longest run for a baseball manager in New York since Joe McCarthy was in the Yankees' dugout from 1931-46.

Steinbrenner said last weekend that he didn't think the Yankees would keep Torre if the team failed to advance from its first-round series with Cleveland. New York was eliminated in four games by the Indians. the Yankees' third straight opening-round exit, but Steinbrenner has been silent on Torre's fate.

Since the Yankees' season ended Monday, New York players, politicians and even opponents have urged Steinbrenner to retain the affable 67-year-old New York native. Boston designated hitter David Ortiz was among the latest to speak out.

"Every organization is like a human body. It has a head that if you mess with it, it just goes down," Ortiz said. "Joe Torre is the head of that organization. He's one of the best managers in baseball. You've got to have a good head to keep the body together like that."

Ortiz credited Torre for helping the Yankees overcome a 21-29 start to make the playoffs as the AL wild-card team.

"Even if they got knocked out, you've got to give him credit for that. You've definitely got to give the man respect," Ortiz said. "If he doesn't go back to the Yankees, they're going to feel that next year somewhere. This guy knows what he's doing."

So when does David Ortiz take over for Cashman?

Oh the irony
