I was 8 in '72. That team was awesome. Oakland might have had the best team of all time and the Sox gave them a run.

ARod did everything Canseco did at a much more important position

Well, offenses in general were more prolific when A-Rod was doing it. And yeah, short is more important than an outfield corner, but Canseco played a good right field in a vast ballpark and had a rocket arm.

A little surprised more folks have not said Rickey Henderson.

IMO it is either him or Griffey Jr.

Barry Bonds... Not sure how anyone who saw him play can say otherwise.. (obviously a cheater, but absolutely dominant)

No. They lowered the mound because offense was down in general. .301 lead the AL. Denny McLain won 31 games. If Gibson was so dominant, how did he lose a third of his starts?

Bill Swift had better seasons than Prior and most people don't even know who he is.

He pitched for the Giants.

Anyway, for me it's probably Young Bonds (terrible rapper, though), BoSox Clemens or Greg Maddux.

If it's a pitcher I'm going to go with Seaver as a righty and R. Johnson as a lefty.

He had one year comparable to 03 Prior and Prior was better

Better win pct more strikeouts. 7.4 war to 4.4 war

Anyway those guys and Randy Johnson and Maddux are the ones that one to mind

It's hard to say "Best you ever saw". The reason is I follow the Cubs. I "see" them throughout my life about 2-5 times a week. If Willie Mays came to town and played great,it has about as much meaning as if Art Shamsky came to town and played great. Having said that, I'd have to go with Barry Bonds. I thought he was great before he juiced. Locally, there is no denying Sammy Sosa's greatness, juiced or not.

Here are my personal "Best" players (Cubs):

Best infielder: Don Kessinger (If you never seen him go deep in the hole, twist his body in midair and throw a guy out, than don't judge)
Best "Clutch" hitter: Jim Hickman(1970) & Billy Williams-anytime
Best relief pitcher- Bruce Sutter (Cubs)
Greatest pitcher I watched-Ferguson Jenkins
Best outfielder- I'll just say Ken Berry White Sox (Cubs OF have been decent here & there but mostly "no")
Most underrated Cub- Jerry Morales-CF (Look up his stats)

Best hitter is Tony gwynn
best all around player is Andre Dawson.

Too short, but brilliant while they lasted:
Eric Davis '87
Puckett
Larry Walker '97-'01

For career position players, probably go with the oft-aftorementioned in this thread

Bonds
Pujols
ARod
Brett
Thomas

I probably place more weight on defense than the average poster, but it's a difficult thing to evaluate. Hurt would be higher if not for that stipulation.

Your first two are the same as mine. I do not agree about Dawson, but I am still trying to think who I would put in that spot.....Ricky Henderson, Arod, Grif, I don't know yet.

Mantle's knees were shot by the time I saw him and Mays at the end was embarrassing. He hung on too long.
Koufax was the greatest pitcher I ever saw. Nobody close.
Griffey was the best all around player I've ever seen.

Bernsie would say you just watched too many ESPN highlight clips.

I guess Pujols matched or surpassed him but as far as hitting goes Frank Thomas for that 7 year stretch or so was the greatest hitter I've ever seen hands down.

Bonds (early) had better WAR numbers than Griffey.

Trout's last year was higher than Early Bonds.

Cal Ripken's 91 was pretty insane

WAR is tricky though. As much as i cite it, unless its comparing the same positions its a little off.

I met Griffey Jr. in the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee when he was a rookie. Biggest sports-jerk I ever met.
