so the team that effectively ruined javvy baez for at least a 1/2-to-full-season by giving him a spring training cocktease with the big club (remember, this is a kid who back in high school got the MLB logo tattooed on his back right under his neck where the logo would be when he wears a MLB jersey. no delusions of grandeur to report here) and oh whoops he looks like the best damn player in camp and he did just about everything in his power to warrant some of that baseball magic that gives the kid a chance to earn his way onto the team that breaks camp heading north for chicago.........

......so of course they sent him to fucking iowa, crushing him to the point where he had to go jack eli whiteside when he was prolly preaching some shit about how "LOOK MAN WE'RE ALL HERE TRYING TO WORK TOGETHER TO WIN GAMES AND YOU'RE NOT GONNA SIT HERE AND SULK WHEN THERE'S 30 GUYS IN THIS CLUBHOUSE WHO... *POW RIGHT IN THE KISSER*

yeah, so this team that undoubtedly made this baseball decision out of anything but financial reasons (don't wanna start his super 2 clock or whatever) are gonna turn around and "splash the cash" to go grab lester, or better yet, giancarlo station in the hopes of fulfilling the "sign a 28-29 year old manny ramirez" part of theo's plan that nobody seems to want to talk about.

i'll believe it when i see it. until then i'll go serve my penance for daring to question "the plan" by saying 10 hail bryants a day.
Bucky Chris doesn't believe they have held any player back in the minors.

Was there some recent confirmation or quote that they will spend money this off season?

fair play man..... we'll see what happens, even tho i personally believe that the ricketts clan is a bunch of creepy pudwhacks who i wouldn't implicitly trust simply because they've put so much effort into "winning the convention" these last few years that they were able to get away with saving ~100mil+ worth of payroll over these last few years simply by paying theo his ~4mil/yr for "the plan."

brilliant business move that's worked swimmingly, i have to give them that, but it wouldn't get my hopes sky high that the whole mantra of "we'll make those cromulent big blockbuster signings when it's time" is imminent considering you're coming off of an offseason when they worked really really hard to convince everyone that they were "in" for tanaka when it was just a giant PR front to bolster their image.

Levine just said Theo from this point forward looking for pitchers and catchers back in trade from this point on. As for FA, I think the Cubs will get 2-3 types and not a super ace till year after.

Traded him for Sam Fuld (Go Cubs) who Beane cut at the beginning of this season.

I bet against that. Not even because I don't think they may try. But I don't think they'll try hard enough.

It's probably happened (I can't think of any right now though). I don't think they have any policy problems with it. I don't think Baez or Bryant have been held back. It's certainly not a plaguing problem like it was suggested.

Yeah, I havent seen any reason to believe they will pay a premium player of any kind

Where is all this "The Cubs have money to spend" stuff coming from?

Well, look. I personally believe the payroll isn't going to stay where it is for the foreseeable future. Now it may not jump back to where it should be next year, but it will get back. They will start spending again. Theo/Jed both said they plan on being much more active this off-season than they have in the past.

Rizzo was held back.

Baez, Bryant, Soler etc definitely haven't. In fact, they've been pretty aggressive with promotions for the most part (within the minor leagues).

So you don't think they have held players back in the minors. That is what I said, and for some reason you seemed to have an issue with it.

I think they'll sign some 2nd tier types but no one that will require forfeiting a draft pick.

Next years projected payroll is like $50M.

Well, if that happens, you'll know that Theo has ripped up "the Plan". The entire core of Epstein's philosophy- and he's stated it over and over and over again- is that he will not pay for past performance, but only for future performance. And I think that's a really sound philosophy. But it puts him in a bit of a trick bag when trying to acquire pitching because team just don't let these guys go when they're under control and in their prime. So you either have to find Arrietas (great move!) or you are going to be paying a relatively old guy like Scherzer for what he's already done. I think it's more likely that you see a blockbuster trade of a few of those heavy prospects for a guy like Darvish than some crazy free agent signing. At least I would hope so if I were a Cub fan and really believed in "the Plan".

Not really. You asked a question (actually, it wasn't really a question. And you backed it up with Bryant as an example):

Boilermaker Rick wrote:
This may be a dumb question, but isn't a lot of the "Cubs minor league is stocked!" stuff because they seemingly have refused to bring up anyone who deserves it until it was almost impossible to keep them down? They've got a guy now who is basically the Barry Bonds of the minor leagues and yet they still don't even know when he is coming up.

And I told you why I don't think they have been "refusing to bring anyone up who deserves it." If you think they have "refused," who are you referring to other than Bryant? If the question was "why are they refusing to bring up Bryant," then you might have a point. I would still disagree. But you're suggestion was it was a system-wide thing and that they were holding multiple players back.

And obviously, Alcantara refuted the theory anyway.

They said they learned their lesson with Rizzo. I don't mind what they're doing with Bryant. He never struggled in A or AA so it's interesting to see him struggle the past two weeks. Better he learn how to make adjustments in AAA than get Junior Lake'd in the majors.

Exactly. Him struggling now is a great example of why it made no sense to rush him. It's the same situation as Baez. And hopefully Bryant bounces back like Baez did. It's a great evaluation mechanism.

I'm not rehashing the debate. You said you don't think anyone was held back which is what I said. sini thinks Baez was held back.
