Yeah, I wouldn't have minded if the Sox had given him 2 years for $30 million, but I don't want that money tied up in him on the back end. Look at Toronto choking on those huge backloaded contracts like Reyes and Buehrle.

17 million per year. Is that even a big deal now?

Maybe not. But it's still a lot of dough tied up in an old guy in the post-steroids era. I'd say that's a big risk over the long term.

I think you have to look at what your goals are. You're a Cub fan and I'm not, but if I were a Cub fan, I would just want a World Series. I wouldn't be concerned about "sustained excellence" or farm systems or any of that. And from that viewpoint, if I sign a guy(s) to a huge deal and win a World Series within the first couple years of the deal(s), I don't give a shit if they're crippled and useless on the back end and killing my whole payroll. But I think you have to decide what your philosophy is and stay with it.

At least Buehrle is still good.

$17 milion for a bat only guy coming off a career year at age 35... the only position he can passably play happens to be inhabited by your franchise player.... it's not a move with a lot of upside.

The pizza man wants to win a World Series in the worst way. He may well be dead when the last of Martinez's money is paid out. You can talk all you want about "sustained excellence" and "playoff crapshoots", but it isn't really great when you never bring home the big prize. That's why Beane dumped good prospects for pitching. From that standpoint you can see why they re-signed Martinez. Ilitch is like jimmpasta except he owns the team.

I can understand why they did it-- that's not to say if you or I were a GM in a vacuum that we would have done it.

I am happy to report to SR86 that his favorite pitcher A.J. Burnett has re-signed with the Pirates for 8.5 million. I am sure he is extremely happy for him.

Sounds like they are getting close to 13 year 325 million dollar contract with Stanton. There is a no trade clause and opt out also in there.

how can an organization sign that contract? that is ridiculous. Baseball players are by far the most overpaid athletes on the planet.

A.J. Burnett is a son of a bitch, and I hope he blows all of his money on drugs and prostitutes.

That doesnt even make him the highest paid (per year)

27 players made 20+ last year

10 made 24+

Cue Career year

If he can bring the power numbers back up, he might set WAR records with his defense

Meh. I thought he was going to be ( supposed to anyway) a stud coming out of the minors. Career .780 OPS .260 hitter doesn't impress me much even with the plus defense. Maybe Im still expecting steroid era numbers though.

Heyward is only 25 years old. He hadn't reached his prime years yet. If the Cards can extend him he could be a monster in the middle of that lineup.

I like it, I'll post some more in the Cardinal section later.

Jordan Walden isn't insignifigant either, at least for 2015-16 (which he is controlled through).

If J-Hey puts up a decent year with the stick (.275/ .360/ .440 ), Mozeliak will have an interesting dilemma to ponder about how much a young, elite defensive player (albeit; CO) is worth on an extension. If Heyward bottoms out or puts up a meh offensive season, I think he comes back easily. I don't think Miller was going to hit his potential in STL, but I wish him well.

Seems like just yesterday, the Barves were thought to be swimming in surplus young pitching talent.

Beachy, Minor, Wood, Teheran, Medlen..... they eventually had to sign Ervin Santana off the scrap pile after they all went down within the year... now a year later, they are dumping their young toolsy outfielder (dare I say, he was mentioned at 20 as a "franchise" player) for Shelby Miller. Miller had his moments, and there is still plenty of time for him, but I wonder if people overrate him due to stuff.. his FIP in his 2 full seasons was 3.67 and 4.04, which is very average-ish.
