This is a key area where we disagree. Pitchers pitch the games they're in. It's not a simulation. I would compare it to taking a scratch club golfer and having him play a course. He might shoot 70. Then you have a top tour pro shoot that same course. Maybe he shoots 75. But if the two guys walk together, the tour guy is going to shoot the lower score the vast majority of the time. That's why he's on the tour and the other guy is a club pro. The same thing could be said for runners. It's vastly different running against a clock than running against a guy in the next lane.

This is complete speculation, and it is likely very wrong.

If it's likely wrong, why the fuck wasn't Hal Miller Tiger Woods? Do you think he liked kissing the asses of a bunch of Catholic douchebags from Sauganash?

I have no idea what you just said, but whatever white guy you're referencing would not consistently shoot lower than Tiger Woods, regardless of match play. If you can prove me wrong, do it.

By far- and I mean by far- the most outlandish statement in this thread is that Nolan Ryan was a top ten all-time pitcher. Now isn't it past your bedtime?

Ridiculous. I know more about modern statistical analysis in baseball than most everyone who posts in the forum.

Sure, you do, JORRY. Once you're done talking with your cyber friends, come and eat your apple sauce.

There's nothing more to add to this thread. Everyone will keep the same opinions, and in my opinion, you lost 21 pages ago. However, I still enjoy your unrelenting stubbornness.

If you're not interested, why do you keep popping in to say "Is this thread still going?" Is it just to act like an asshole? There are plenty of other topics. And thankfully for this forum something called leashyourkids doesn't have carte blanche to declare winners and losers.

And while I'm at it, get the fuck outta here. If you actually do believe half of what you say, you're out of your mind. I always thought your positions were funny and that you were putting on an "old school" act. If you're not, you're ridiculous. If this is honestly what you believe, in addition to your thoughts on athletes, sports fans, human evolution, etc., you are a very, very, very emotional human being. You long for the olden days when "fancy" things like TV's and computer software didn't ruin your favorite pastimes. You dig in with an emotional stance and try to defend it at all costs, despite having no rational response to 90% of the people debating you. So eat me, you old bastard.

And if this is a bit, nice work.

Let's talk about human evolution since you brought it up. Do you think humans have "evolved" in a single generation?

JORR's W/L record is taking a beating in this thread even though he's been great in other areas I don't think he's having a good thread. Clearly he hasn't been better than chas and his PAR™ is very poor.

No. I actually agree with you on that one. It's absurd to think otherwise. But I do think the talent pool has expanded.

I was following everything until the golf analogies came up, after which I got completely lost. The only golfer I know a great deal about is Happy Gilmore, who also happens to be the only hockey player I know a lot about.

Yeah, of course. But there are also more options. A kid who would have been boxing or playing baseball 100 years ago maybe be skateboarding or playing volleyball today. I certainly don't think the best American athletes are playing baseball.

The point was simply that there's a difference in playing head-to-head with something on the line. I have no way of proving this, but I think if you kept the pitchers unaware of what was happening when their team batted, kept them ignorant of the score, we might well have different guys being the top pitchers.

Agreed, but that may be true of any major sport. I think more than anything, specific "skills" are being honed at an earlier age, like dribbling or shooting or whatever. The athletic ability may be slightly enhanced by modern training techniques, but in general, a 40" vertical is a 40" vertical is a 40" vertical. Evolution takes place over tens of thousands of years, at the least.

There has definitely been a movement toward playing a single sport year round. And really just in the last ten or fifteen years. With few exceptions the top multi-sport athlete is a thing of the past.

I think I've done pretty good. I've swung at least a few undecideds. I didn't expect to change the minds of the true believers.

Don't get emotional on me now.

You don't disagree with me on evolution and you really don't disagree with me about sports fans. You know there has to be a definition of "fan". It can't just be that you say you're a fan of something. Like Frank the big Super Bowl fan acting like his finances are stopping him from seeing one when he plays many rounds of golf each summer and plays in a couple bands. It's just his choices. It's fine. He doesn't have to see a Super Bowl. He may be a Super Bowl fan, but he's a bigger fan of playing golf and playing in his band. He can watch the Super Bowl on TV. It's a great TV show. Even I'm a fan of the Super Bowl TV show! It's nothing to get angry about. It's like when I had a conversation with the old lady about public transportation. She was telling me how much she loves it. But she never takes it. So I told her she really hates it. Then she got mad. But how much can she really "love" it when she never uses it?

Maybe neither here nor there but Nolan Ryans name doesnt come up anywhere near the top 10 all time whom I would choose to start a game 7 .

He couldn't. He just didn't win enough. That's because he was wild. In fact, most years he wasn't the best pitcher on his team. But I appreciate what Ryan was. He's a complete oddity. A freakish one-of-a-kind player.

This thread was mind numbing. What I read of it.
Question for JORR.
If Greg Maddux played 22 years in chicago instead of 11 of those in Atlanta, does he still get 355 wins?

I mean, same pitcher. But instead of Atlanta, he plays for chicago during the miserable stretch of the cubs 93-2003 seasons?

I don't think he does. I don't think he gets there. not with the teams the Cubs were fielding in those years.
He's the same pitcher. But he wouldn't get the same number of wins.

Many that is true, but an incomplete statement.

Sure, he likely has a few less. But I'm not trying to parse it down to say he'd be less great if his winning percentage was .585 instead of 6whateveritis. And I believe he won 20 with the Cubs and never did it again. Isn't that right?

A few less.

What do you think? He would have been under .500 pitching for the Cubs? I don't believe that for a minute. He would have made that stretch Darkside mentioned slightly less miserable.
