It will (or should) when a certain QB who was addicted to painkillers ends up on the ballot.

The reason why you don't hear such discussions in the Pro Football Hall of Fame is that their voters only look at on-field performance. I don't think that'll keep Brett Favre out of Canton when his time comes.

That's one of the reasons why I want Bud Selig out as Commissioner. He was asleep at the wheel and could've done something about steroids in baseball a long time ago...

Everybody was asleep at the wheel, GM's, managers, media, fans and the list goes on and on. Nobody wanted to know or cared at the time what was going on, just wanted to see those guys continue to crush it and pitchers continue to throw harder and harder.

MLB's lifeblood is stats. When it gets f'ed with, fans get angry.

Right. There is a certain "purity of the game" sort of romanticism that exists in baseball and doesn't exist in the other major sports.

But would you agree that "romanticism" is pure bullshit? It's just another sport.

Personally, I would. But it's that whole sacred, national pastime thing. Baseball historians deal with the sport with almost religious reverence.

Yes, but try telling that to a fifty year old guy who insists he remembers with complete clarity that day 47 summers ago when his father carried him into beautiful Wrigley Field and he first smelled the grass.

Hey now, don't forget the old-timer who still remembers his first waft of pot smoke at Comiskey. Interest of fairness!

BBWA will look like tools no matter what happens. Any of them that send in a blank ballot as a "protest" should lose their vote. Wouldn't surprise me if no one gets in this year, Biggio and Raines get close.

Biggio had 3,000 hits. That's a lock to get in.

Just saw a blurb for a MLB Network Hall of Fame voting results show. If nobody gets in, what will they announce?

Many vote-tracking sites are predicting that nobody gets elected.
Just a guess, but I bet someone will get voted in. Be it a Jack Morris or Craig Biggio... definitely not one of the big suspected steroid guys.

Even still... it will be interesting to see how these guys are viewed in say, a decade. Bonds has to get in eventually, he was probably the greatest offensive force I have seen play.
Actually, I don't really care that much-- it will just be a final sign that the HOF is way past relevant until some of these angry old-school voters die off or get replaced...

Peter Gammons just said the Dept. of Justice couldn't prove Clemens did steroids.

Everyone knows that steroids only affected hitters, and no pitchers were taking them. DUH!

That Al Capones vault is in fact, still empty.

Or they'll just play clips of a mic'd up Tommy Lasorda coaching third.

I actually want to hear what Lasorda says (off-camera) when/if Piazza goes in as a Met...

No one elected by BBWA.

Biggio had 68.2%

You know, back in the early-mid '00s I was really impassioned about baseball being clean and exposing the cheaters. I bought into the notion that McGwire, Sosa, Bonds, Giambi, Clemens, Gonzalez, and others were fucking up the game. I was one of those guys who hoped the roiders would never get inducted. Now, about 10 years later, I can honestly say that I don't really give two shits about it. Let em all in. I no longer care, and I hate that I don't care anymore but I honestly don't. I guess I'm just over it. I still love baseball. Nothing has changed that. Bonds or Sosa or McGwire getting into the HOF wouldn't diminish my love for the sport either.

Lee Smith: better than Roger Clemens.
36% for Bonds is a joke.
Sucks Kenny Lofton was one and done. Not that he was worthy, but I liked him.

I still can't believe Biggio didn't get in. He wasn't involved in any steroid scandals, was he? 3,000 hits is a guaranteed ticket, right?

I have heard numerous voters say that don't trust anybody from that era. Also, there are people that people that believe just because he got 3000 hits, he doesn't necessarily belong in. Never won a MVP, did it on longevity only, etc. I don't believe it, just another way for these idiots to try and justify something.

Biggio was a catcher who actually gained speed during his career. He eventually wound up at 2B and CF. I'm not sure why people associate PEDs with only the sluggers.

I say let 'em all in if you are so inclined, and use this years' results as an impetus to overhaul the old voters.

Still nothing stupider than the "controversy" that is baseball players taking steroids.

What I see them doing is creating a rule that says something like everyone over 75% gets in, and if nobody reaches that threshold, the highest vote getter still gets in. Just so they don't have another empty class again.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that 1996 ballot didn't have the dazzle of a Bonds or Clemens or anyone of a similar calibre.

Maybe they should just replace their voters, who are clearly too stupid to hold their spot.
