Well ya both started getting all worked up about lester. It's code for YAH WELL CUBS SUCK!

I know what you feel like though. I know plenty of Sox fans.

Don't worry the division is still all yours and likely the NL. No problem.

It's funny...you listen to a dude take shots at your team over and over again, in person mind you, and you blow it off...then you dare once point out that his team's ace hasn't been very good this year and all of a sudden you suffer from Sox meatball syndrome and are getting personal.

Maybe people are a little sensitive from the Frank fallout

OK, i got what you were trying to say.. but the bolded part just reinforces my original statement. An ace-level starter going every 5th day being worth 2.1 wins over the presumed 6th starter is quite big in statistical terms, but not unable to overcome with a team with starter depth. I'm not going to go all Brick on you and get into more stats, clearly you don't understand them. Speaking of WHIP, it appears Lester's is 1.6.

I remember many heartbreaking seasons that were lost by .1 of a win!

Nah man... it's the speed at which it happens. Didn't take ya long at all for both you guys to go all WELL LESTER SUCKS!. Don't get me wrong. I like that. I think it shows that the Cards will be just fine. Probably gonna win two world series this year. If anyone can do that it's the cardinals. And the words greatest fans!

Drink a beer or 3 man. It's ridiculous to argue with someone who thinks everyone is trolling even when they aren't.

Cmon man. Lester sucks. That in and of itself means that the Cards are probably gonna roll to what, we're talking dynasty here, so is 4 or 5 world series in a row really out of the question?

What if I want to drink two? Is that allowed. You know, for each World Series the Cards are going to win this year.

...and now he's spilling over to other threads.

Very Frank-ish/"Sox fan" behavior, no?

...so yeah...there's no way they can keep it up.

MLB Rank

ERA: 1.92 1st .The 2nd place Royals are over a full run worse at 2.98 ERA
BAA Against: .206, 1st
Shutouts: 3, 3rd
K/9: 8.36, 9th
Cleveland Indians lead the pack with -- and this is not a typo -- 10.75 K/9. For the whole team. Good GOB, Kluber and Co. can pitch a little.
SO/BB Ratio: 3.15, 3rd. The Coob lead the league in SO/BB at 4.30, even as Darkside will point out to you, Lester's troubles at the top.
WHIP: 1.08, 1st
OPS Against: .594
The Cards are 1st in both OBP and SLG% Against at .276 and .319, respectively, so it has been a remarkably dominant start to the season.

Unustainable? Yeah... even before Waino going down.

The difference between running Wainwright out there or some random sixth starter every fifth day for an entire season is at least 8, likely 10, wins per year. Keep the math.

It is kind of interesting... I don't think it means anything, other than some kind of trivia on a future fan calender or something... STL won the World Series during the last two seasons in which Wainwright was not a significant contributor to the team’s starting rotation (during his 2011 Tommy John recovery season and during his 2006 rookie season coming out of the bullpen).

Now we had some chatter of WAR and VORP upthread, as JORR will have you know, SABR guys tend to misuse these new stats in a different way, and I’m not above hitting a guy over the head in error here—I’ve done it too. I will look at Fangraphs, see that ZiPS has him worth 4.1 Wins Above Replacement, and posit that Waino is worth four wins. I will decide that if the Cardinals were going to win 92 games with Adam Wainwright, which is probably enough to win the NL Central, they are now going to win 88 games, which possibly throws them into a dogfight with the Cub and Pie Rat. Now we have Wacha and Martinez pitching out of their minds, and again I'm not suggesting they are both 1.33, 1.35 ERA pitchers as they have shown to this point, we discussed this as being unsustainable (NO SHIT?!), these guys were options 4 and 6 going into the year, but due to the injuries to Waino, Garcia and the emergence of the Lance Lynn of the last couple years are now being counted on as 2 and 3. Speaking of LL, himself of the sub-2.00 ERA and FIP, is he really an ace? Probably not, but maybe he can be the 19th-best SP in baseball as MadBum was last year, or the 31st best SP just as Darko's buddy Lester was in 2013. You don't need a huge horse at the top, assuming you have 2-3 other decent options for the PLAYOFFS?! crapshoot. I don't think Marco Gonzales/Tim Cooney/Tyler Lyons is going to really replicate a healthy Adam Wainwright obviously, but if those options start to stink, Mo will go and get someone not named Hamels. A true ace is a great thing to have, but a World Series can be won without one, assuming you have a few guys that are well above average.

Now here's the doom version: Garcia went down, as he always does. Gonzales looks like a 3/4 type. but he has a nagging issue now as well. Those were options 6 and 7 leading into the season, meaning the Cardinals could already be on options 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 in the rotation barring further injuries. Option 5 (Martinez) has never thrown more than 114 innings in a season. Option 4 (Wacha) has never thrown more than 107 innings in a season. Option 3 (Lackey) has been reliable so far but is now 36 and has an injury history that is downright frightening. and Lance is currently Option 1.

The 6-8 guys were said to be comparable to the average 4,5 starter. This will obviously test that theory. It would not surprise me in the least if Marco Gonzales comes up and looks like a young Beuerhle for a month or two. And they have quite a few guys hiding in AA who hit 95 on the gun with pitchability... not to sound like i'm gloating, or predicting it will happen, but we've seen this movie before. Cardinals do not overhype their prospects like the '90s-2000's NYM/Sawx, they like to keep them off the radar. If none of this works, sign David Price in the offseason.
