This has to be a first. The first pinch hitter the Reds bring into the game on Opening Day - their 5th starter.

Ok - It's Micah Owings, but come on. That's the first guy off your bench? You're #5 starter??

. . . and he struck out.

I guess Dusty knows what he's doing. He brought Owings in to pinch hit in a 1-1 game in the 7th with two runners on and he doubled to left to put the Reds ahead to stay.

He's 2 for 5 with 2 doubles. Now pitching may be a different story. Cub fans will see him pitch on Tuesday at Wrigley.

To me that seems better than "mediocre closer at best".

Yeah I get that you are all things Cincinatti but I stand by my statement that I think Cordero is a mediocre closer at best. He also had 6 blown saves last year. I am not saying he is awful. I am saying he is in the middle of the pack for closers in the game. Hence mediocre.

In his first start in the bandbox he gave up only 1 run in 7 innings vs. the Braves and lowered his ERA to 3.76. He went 2 for 3 yesterday and has 3 doubles on the year.

Not bad for a 5th starter.

I'd say it will compare to the Cubs'. 6th shutout last night - tops in MLB. Cubs have one.

Best ERA in MLB at 3.61. Cubs are eleventh. Cueto and Volquez have been unhittable the past few weeks.

We'll see about that.
All I'm saying is that saying this guy not being in the lineup handicapps the Reds is a bullshit excuse. A very Dusty excuse. And I missed that kind of clueless hopelessness. I'm glad it's still alive and well in Cincinnati.

Looks like Nas might be on to something here. Tavaras has .318 BA and is #7 in runs scored in the NL, putting him 25% of the way to 100 runs.

I've seen Taveras take many a Pierre-like route to a flyball. Which isn't good

Swept by the Padres. Good stuff. Almost makes me not hate the padres with all my heart, but doesn't really.

Well, I'm sure a "you hate Dusty and you're making this personal" spin will be put on it by somebody.

The Reds have a good young team. It's a shame to watch these guys work that hard and have the outcome of this series be determined by the umpiring.

Watching the Reds get swept by a shit west team. P.U.
And it's not really all that amazing. I'm sure you'll hear more after Willy Mays Hays goes 0 for another weekend.

You are a Reds meatball. Steve is a Cubs meatball. The similarities are striking.

The best part of the story for those of us who think Dusty is a bad manager.....

"One inning into the game, manager Dusty Baker had lost ace righthander Edinson Volquez, just off the disabled list where he had gone when he suffered back spasms. This time, after allowing one run in the first but fanning the final two hitters in the inning, Volquez left with numbness in the ring finger and pinkie finger of his throwing hand, with his next appearance to take place today in Cincinnati at the offices of Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the team's medical director"

Another ace pitcher with arm trouble.....Shocking
