http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/16198 ... its-record Ichiro Suzuki is about to become the all-time hits leader. Or is he? Pete Rose doesn't think so. Ichiro has 2,977 Major League Baseball hits to go along with his 1,278 hits in nine seasons in Japan. Add them up and the Miami Marlins outfielder is one hit shy of tying Rose's major league record of 4,256 hits. "It sounds like in Japan, they're trying to make me the Hit Queen," Rose told USA Today Sports. "I'm not trying to take anything away from Ichiro -- he's had a Hall of Fame career -- but the next thing you know, they'll be counting his high school hits. "I don't think you're going to find anybody with credibility say that Japanese baseball is equivalent to Major League Baseball. There are too many guys that fail here and then become household names there, like Tuffy Rhodes. How can he not do anything here and hit [a record-tying] 55 home runs [in 2001] over there? It has something to do with the caliber of personnel.'' Love that Rose was able to work in a Tuffy Rhodes reference. |

I hate Rose, but in this case he's right. Japanese baseball is not the big leagues. |

Ichiro getting to 3k MLB hits when he began his MLB career at age 27 is to me way more impressive than his combined hit total. BTW, what are the odds Pete Rose put a futures bet on Ichiro's final hit total 6+ years ago? |

Best hitter of a generation but no, this doesn't count. Rose is right and people should stop mentioning this as if it were a legit thing. |

This is idiotic. It isnt a debate and that isnt an insult to Ichiro either. Maybe he could have been if he started younger. If my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle. (Maybe not anymore in this country though... ) |

Just add in Pete Rose's minor league stats. I'm sure that would give him another 300 hits or so. |

427 minor league hits. Ichiro can play 3 more years and reach that and then we can have this discussion again. |

Japanese baseball is AA at best. Yes there are a few good pitchers... Nomo, Kuroda, Darvish and some relivers Shingo and Koji Uehara. But come on look at what guys like Tuffy Rhodes and Matt Murton did once they got to Japan. Rose is the hit king . |

Ichiro dominated MLB on Day1. You can mention it in the context of "gee I wonder", but to equate the two is patently false and completely nonsensical. There is no other logical, not to mention objective, side to this. |
