I don't know if this has ever been discussed here, but I think it needs to be hashed out. |

For a team, very much so. For a pitcher, entirely irrelevant. This concludes tonight's review. Thank you for stopping by; good night. |

Wins for a pitcher are the ultimate result of each game he pitched. |

As of late, wins for the Cub have been scarce. Sometimes, it's the starting pitching, in others it's been the bullpen. In any event, a loss is a loss and losses suck. |

Don Tiny wrote: For a pitcher, entirely irrelevant. And this is entirely wrong. As with most stats, wins for a pitcher are not the end all be all, but they do tell you something. Only imbeciles would completely ignore W-L for pitchers, especially starters. You need to look no further than Chicago's MLB teams to see this. You look at Quintana's record and you would think that he is not a very good pitcher. Then look at some of his other stats and you would change your stance a bit. You look at Jake Arrietta's W-L record, and you would probably think he is having a great year. Then you delve into some of his other stats, especially over the last month, and "great" would be the furthest thing from your mind. For the record, I think both guys are having really good seasons so far. |
