Kendrys Morales to the Blue Jays for 3 yrs/$33M.
Guess this means they couldn't reach an agreement with Encarnacion. Hard to image those two on the same team as they're both primarily DH's. Maybe they plan on bringing Bautista back.
yeah i had the same thought here, but then i remembered that justin smoak appeared in 129 games as a 1B/DH for the 2016 blue jays. 299AB/341PA of .217/.314/.391 (.705 OPS) good for .217/14/34 so essentially, for the time being you've just upgraded the justin smoak role to kendrys morales (seeing as two 1B/DHs can obviously complement each other) but yeah obviously kendrys morales is more likely to start filling the edwin encarnacion gap, especially when you read that they're interested in steve pearce for a possible 1B platoon. pearce rebounded from an awful 2015 and early 2016 to provide ~60 games / 204 ABs of .309/10/29 via a pretty hard platoon with guys like brad miller, logan morrison, and even logan forsythe.
personally i thought the mets should throw caution to the wind and try to bring in encarnacion to hopefully provide a big dumb mashing 1B while their pitching staff hopefully finds better health in 2017. if you've got syndergaard, degrom, and maybe even matz going at/near 100% along with matt harvey (who the mets now claim was hurt all year! mm-hmm!) and of course the oft-forgotten zach wheeler, i think it's totally worth risking ~3-4 years of bad to horrible $$$ on the back-end of an encarnacion deal to try and get someone in there who is a "proven run producer" just in case your pitching clicks and goes on a run not too different from, say, the 2005 white sox or even the 2015 mets, of course! if you end up with 3-4 of those "big"/top pitchers healthy and doing their thing i think the mets pretty easily have the best rotation in baseball, and if ANYONE could catch lighting in a bottle and pull a 2005 white sox it's the mets; hell, cubs fans here might remember my old proclamation that "the mets can pitch to the cubs!" circa april 2015, which ended up pretty much working out that way when the 2015 NLCS came around.
that said, you figure that encarnacion would probably want to stay in the AL because of the DH and that point it basically means that he's going to end up a red sox or a yankee; the former being the most obvious landing spot (david ortiz even endorsed signing EE himself) and the yankees always being able to wake up from their ~5 year nap and remember "HEY WAIT A MINUTE, WE'RE THE NEW YORK FUCKING YANKEES!!!" and then they just throw a metric assload of $$$ at encarnacion in order to have him effectively replace the traditional "mark teixeira" role, which is honestly in dire need of replacing (unless you figure that you wanna get gary sanchez out from behind the plate full-time)
absolute dark horse for EE? the los angleles angles of angleheim! they love to throw lots of big/stupid years/$$$ at people who are aging, and with encarnacion, what, pushing 33-34? shock the world and give him those 7th and 8th years he never dreamed of getting arte! or well, hey, don't forget about the rangers-- prince fielder's shock retirement just saved them (let alone detroit) a bunch of $$$ and i could see them swooping in and landing him and having something really nice cooking there with encarnacion, odor, andrus/go-fush/profar/ beltre.... and then mazara, choo//whoever./.... that'd be nice.
anyways rahm is cracking me the fuck up so bbl
