20 years will be the longest baseball has gone without expansion since the expansion era began. I think the talent is there for 50+ more major leaguers, but I don't think the markets are.

Wouldn't mind seeing a team in Portland, Louisville, Charlotte, or a return of the Expos in Montreal

The upper minors are immensely talented. There are at least one hundred serviceable major leaguers wallowing in AAA, a lot of them will likely never get a shot. There are more than enough players around to accommodate a lot more than two new teams.

Nashville. Louisville would be cool but its so damn close to Cinci and they are the AAA team for cinci.

Portland isn't interested and Louisville is Reds territory. The Expos have to be on top of the list, and Charlotte not too far behind.

Revive the Expos, expand to Mexico City (home runs galore!) and create a residency program for a domeless cold weather franchise to play April games in Havana and/or Santo Domingo. Long term there has to be a plan to bring Asia in....it's just too valuable.

North Carolina is such a poor shithole that I think they would be a small market struggling team always.

There should be at least one more team in New York.

Montreal is an interesting case.

POUR: Rogers owns the Blue Jays and airs them coast-to-coast-to-coast on their family of RSNs. TSN, owned by Bell, the other half of Canada's telecom duopoly, could use the summer programming to finish re-establishing themselves after the gut-punch loss of the NHL (though they're crawling back by adding the Canadiens in English back to TSN). The Expos would then be a national team with the Blue Jays, the way the Cubs and Sox share TV territory but with an entire country. It would bring a cool city back into the National League, and visiting players would enjoy the high-class strippers and whores.

CONTRE: the demographics of Montreal have shifted rapidly since the 1970s, with the rise of the separatists pushing a lot of the English-speaking and especially (((English-speaking))) baseball fans out of the province. As a result, Toronto has replaced Montreal as Canada's largest and most important city. There's no public money in the province to replace shithole Stade Olympique; Quebec spent a ton of money on Quebec City's new arena for an NHL team that the league won't give them and everyone feels a little burned. A new Expos team would be beset by many of the same problems as the old one, like players hating to live in Canada (this is hurting the NHL really hard these days) and lack of interest among francophones, plus some new ones, like Montreal's influx of immigration from countries that vastly prefer soccer to baseball. And though the Canadiens would happily rescind their custody of Youppi!, the CH still casts a long shadow on the sports scene.

Portland is all in on soccer, Louisville is too small and too close to Cincinnati, Charlotte is committed to AAA for the near future because they just built a new Knights park, fuck Las Vegas, maybe San Antonio or Austin could support a team.

The South needs more teams. Nashville is a natural.

I dunno, I think the Manhattan/Brooklyn/Newark triad works in the NHL because there's much less ticket inventory and the Islanders and Devils were lucky to build suburban niche fanbases by rattling off multiple championships, but Yankees/Mets seems pretty crystallized now with no room for a third team in North Jersey or wherever. I'm sure you could have said the same thing about the Devils rolling in from Denver but that was in the early '80s when the Rangers were such a shitshow that their games weren't even on the radio all the time. It's a different media landscape.

I'll trade them an MLB team for an NHL team.

Well, the city isn't going to get rid of the most popular team in Cook County, and I doubt you want to see the Cubs move

I thought Buffalo was poised to get a team (maybe the Expos?) in the early 90s. I know it's a small market and snow-outs might occur in April, but I thought they were a candidate for a while. I guess both of those things scared the MLB off. Fine with me....

OKC?

I thought about San Juan in Puerto Rico because of their love for baseball, but the economy is just not good enough for a major league team there.

Indianapolis?
Memphis?
Oklahoma City?

I'll admit part of me wants to see San Antonio just for the shitshow of 2-3 years in the Alamodome where it would be like 290 down the left field line or something.

They were in the mix, their new AAA stadium was built to expand to major-league standards, but Buffalo's in much worse shape now than it was then. They're clinging to the Bills and Sabres for dear life.

Before adding another team maybe they can force the Padres to start acting like a major league team

How long until MLB teams have "major league" teams elsewhere? Like, a brand, like the U of C is doing?

I'd like to see the Seoul White Sox....though knowing the Sox, they'd opt for Pyonyang

Considering baseball is the most anti-gambling sport, I am not sure if they'll ever go for a team in Vegas. Even if a team wanted to move there I'm not sure if the owners would approve.

I've heard rumors for the last 10 years or so about an expansion team in Mexico. Not sure where that is now.

It's still right below the US.

Mexico City is 7,400 feet above sea level and the air is full of suspended particles of shit. Kinda rather not. I think MLB looked at moving the Expos to Monterrey, though.

Norfolk or Virginia Beach is mildly intriguing but the Orioles and Nats would throw a bitchfit.
