The future of baseball? Seems to be headed that way.

Brian Kenny and John Smoltz make a pretty good case that the Yankees should bullpen the WC game.

It would work well against the Cubs I think. They seemingly crush starters in the 2nd and 3rd time around.

The problem is, the more pitchers you use, the more likely you're going to find the guy who is having a bad day.

That's one part of it. But on the other hand if a guy is having a bad day, you dont have him planned for 5-6 innings so you can yank him quickly without blowing up the pen.

I think there will still be starters or "openers" going 3-4 innings

It's not a bad idea if you just need to win 1 game, but it would not work over the course of a long season. Teams just don't have enough good arms to make this a daily play.

Pussificafion of baseball. Pathetic.

If you can't find a pitcher that can go out and give 6-7 good innings you don't deserve to move on.

Kenny makes a pretty compelling case.

Here's an example.

https://calltothepen.com/2016/09/10/mlb ... ext-trend/

You'd actually have 2 starters (4-6 inning guys) and bullpen the other 3 days

We're already down to expecting 5-6 out of a starter instead of 7-8...what's a few more?

Just get rid of pitchers altogether. Just have the batter toss the ball up in the air to himself and hit it.

This reminds me of a contest the Cubs did probably 15-20 years ago where someone would be selected in a drawing for the chance to hit a home run out of Wrigley and they would win something like a new car. When the big voice guy on the commercial is going through all the terms and conditions, he casually mentions the home run must be hit fungo style.

Even Bonds or McGwire in their prime roided up playing days probably couldn't hit a fungo out of Wrigley, let alone some fat bleacher bum.

I could see this being effective maybe a few starts in the rotation if you did a tandem thing every time -- Player A goes for 4 innings, then player B always relieves him for 3 or 4. You could do a six man rotation with four regular guys and these two going every third game.

You are banking on a lot of guys never having bad days.

One game, this should work, over the season, I do not know. My thought is that one of the reasons that a reliever can be effective is the whole 'only see them a few times.' That's why I was concerned with throwing Chapman out as often as they did in the series, the hitters could start figuring him out. Especially because relievers tend to only have two pitches.

Relievers tend to be failed starters, and guys who thrive in specific circumstances.
This is dumb. I hope they do it.

I dont really like it for one game even. Too many points of failure. Let's say you use seven pitchers over a 9 inning game. Six of those guys are lights out, 0 ER. 1 guy is not and he gets lit up for 4 ER. Now you've used 7 pitchers, six of whom had great performances, and all you got out of it was an average/slightly above average outcome that you can get get with most any reasonably decent major league starter. Too much can go wrong.

Heyward would still ground out to second.

Well, i think they would still be in those circumstances.

Part of it is the idea that if Mariano Rivera or Andrew Miller is your best pitcher, you'd rather have him pitch 90 innings than 60.

The starting pitcher has been fading away like the picture in Back to the Future for a while now, I dont think it's going to stop.

I would guess you'd have 4-5 pitchers most games. Like you have now many times. You'd just be eliminating the rare games where 1-2 guys pitch.

Too many off days in the playoffs. Only Robertson might be unavailable for Game 1.
