Quote: Nationals: 2017 Max Scherzer 16-6, 2.51 ERA, 268 K We're -- controversially! -- ignoring the Expos and sticking with the Nats here. It's possible this year has, in fact, been better. If you do include the Expos, as you should, I don't know how you don't go with 1997 Pedro Martinez (17-8, 1.90 ERA, 305 K). I'll bet Pedro worked way harder for those strikeouts than Scherzer ever did. |

Arrieta's 2015 season is tops over Maddux in 1992 for the Cubs. Love seeing Pedro over Clemens for Boston. Pedro in his prime was incredible. |

Arrieta had better PEDs. |

As for the Sox, I gotta believe there was a more dominant season for a pitcher than that of Eddie Cicotte, and that he was only included to argue that Charles Comiskey made throwing the series Actually Good. |

Completely different era for Pitchers. Cicotte and Ted Lyons put up some monster years. For the five man rotation era, perhaps the best run Chicago has seen was Jose Contreras from July '05 thru July '06. He was probably 42 years old when he went nearly one calendar year between losses. |

I just thought it was ironic how the Cubs greatest SP has his best single season the year after the Cubs traded him for Madlock. I guess lost in the shuffle is Sutcliffes 1984 season for the Cubs:16-1,because it was a partial. |

Sutcliffe was like Hamels...horrid with his old team before getting traded to the Cubs. |

So they use the modern era excuse as a reason to go with Maddux, but pick Cicotte? |

Just want to toss out some love for Steve Carlton's first(?) season with the Phils were he won 50+% of the games for a team that won less than 60 total. Something for JORR to hang his biking hat on. |

How close to .500 counts as good? at what point are they "a .500 pitcher" Is .507 a wining pitcher? .525? |

I think 85 games over-- 329-244 -- is pretty damn good. Now he started 709 games, but appeared in about 30 more so not all of those W-L may have come as a starter. But the fact is that Carlton has a stellar career W-L record. Jacob DeGrom has a pretty good W-L record so far as well. Jose Quintana does not. |

1971, Vida Blue's first year as a starter was damned impressive. 24 - 8, 1.82 ERA, 312 IP, 301 K's, MVP and Cy Young. |

Starting qualifier aside, he had a .574 winning percentage and with a 16-37 record after 85, for a guy who pitched quite a bit in the sixties. |

You frequently answer on this topic with "He has a career ___ winning pct" Where the line for good? |

I just want to know what level is for the WinningPct Cultists. |

Wow,this was something because it was modern era: Tigers: 1968 Denny McLain 31-6, 1.96 ERA Advanced stats would argue this wasn't even McLain's best year, and there are some great Justin Verlander seasons not here, as well as the great 1976 Mark Fidrych year … but 31 wins are 31 wins. I have to mention one of my favorite Sox players,Wilbur Wood. The guy put up some monster seasons in the '70's with yeomen worked IP,BF,etc. Also, won 20 games 4 years in a row. |
