Hall of the Very Good. Not a HOF. |

I wonder what would have happened if he decided to be the QB at FSU. |

Did not even play catcher the last half of his career. He was a light hitting Mark Grace. Hall of Good. HOF, no way. |

Part of me feels anyone with three batting titles is an automatic, but I have to lean a bit toward no with Mauer. |

The case from baseball-reference: https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... jo01.shtml MVP 6x All-Star 3x Gold Glove 5x Silver Slugger 3x Batting Title HOFers Craig Biggio, Mickey Cochrane (catcher of those great 1930s Philadelphia A's! I guess!), and Alan Trammell turn up in his similarity scores, but they're dominated by Hall of Pretty Good for a Long Timers like Michael Young, Ray Durham, and Benito Santiago. He's well short on all the Hall trackers: 15 in Black Ink (league-leading season stats) when he'd need 27, and a mere 43 in Gray Ink when he needs 144. By the numbers, he's a no, but he's a hometown franchise player who got the Twins good enough to get a replacement for the Metrodome. I'd say keep him in your back pocket if you need an induction in a slow year, but not first-ballot. |

Surefire if he could hit some dingers. But he didn't, so no. HOF catcher/1B need dingers. |

Similar to Craig Biggio, so yes he will eventually be in the HOF. |

Mauer makes me want the Hall to be bigger. It's already getting to the point where some guys are in and you wonder why other guys are out...so why not let a lot more players in without it becoming Basketball or Football? We know who the best-of-the-best are anyway, so why not honor a lot more players that treated the game right and were awesome players as well. The Hall wouldn't be lesser with Mauer, Mattingly, Murphy, Whitaker, Bernie Williams, and many more guys that are considered borderline. Of course there will always be a borderline, but if the old standard was two HOF players per year, I'm ready for that to be four with a lot of players from the past getting in while they can enjoy it with their families. |

Jay Jaffe has him rated higher than the average catcher in JAWS and said he would vote for him if given the opportunity. |

Mauer DID get the shit kicked out of him being a catcher. And he was awesome during those years. The question is do we give him the Sandy Koufax pass? MANY knowledgeable fans and writers would. I wouldn't. I'm a prick, I guess. I think Koufax is iffy. |

I know that barn door has been open for a long time but I think voters should start with the presumption against a player being HOF worthy when they begin their scrutiny. |
