Much like with starting goalies, if your team is from two cities, it's from no city. A half-measure like this will kill the Rays in Tampa and won't get them going in Montreal. For support, we can look to MLB moving a third of the Expos' home games to San Juan, which was the final killshot in putting Montreal away the first time around, and didn't seem to do much in the long run for San Juan, either. If the Rays are to move, it should be to Portland or Vancouver. I don't see a future in Montreal where the English population has dropped significantly since the Expos' heyday and the allophone community has taken its place. |

Anecdotally, there is interest for baseball in Montreal. My wife's grandmother lives in Monteal so I've visited it every other year and you see a lot of diamonds with teams practicing in the city parks. But this will fail. You have to commit rather than half-assing it. |

Move them full time and change name back to Expos. |

Seems like a distant third behind hockey and soccer. But are baseball players going to bitch about living in Montreal the way hockey players do? Because NHLers are extreme attractiveladies about having to live in (gasp) Montreal. That could be a big problem. |

Definitely. Baseball's good ol' boy contingent will despise it. Latin American players less so since many seem to function just fine in the US with rudimentary English. |

Especially if they move Montreal to the AL so they can benefit from 18(19?) games a year with & easy travel to Toronto. |

Vancouver strikes me as a place where the people won't really care about that team, kinda like LA doesn't care about NFL football. Especially during the warmer baseball season. |

Kind of a parallel to hockey's Good Tronna/Awntarya Kids, where Europeans have happily played in Montreal and Quebec City while dudes from Mississauga open up their veins at the prospect of living in Quebec. And paying Quebec taxes. |

This is just yet another attempt to steal public money for a new stadium. If you recall in 2001-2002 when Bud Selig was talking about contraction....the Florida teams were not considered. It was the Expos and Twins. Stadium leases in Florida were escape proof. We must finally be seeing the light of the end of the tunnel for Tampa stadium lease. I don't really give a shit what they do with the Rays...team name is stupid.....stadium is stupid.... ...jazz is stupid. |

The first blow against the Expos was the separatist movement and the language laws. Then you had the Olympic Stadium boondoggle and the inability to replace it. Then the strike, then Loria ownership, then contraction threats, it was just a string of misfortune. |

All I know is the world has gotten steadily worse since the Expos were no more. Coincidence? Maybe. Who can really say? |

I'll wait for Sini or Gary from Evanston to weigh in on the matter before I decide how to feel about this. |

I don't really miss the Expos. Never got into the Montreal thing. I guess it's nostalgia now. I don't think you'll see a devil ray anywhere in Montreal except maybe the zoo. I thought Tampa had a plan to build a new stadium in one of the revitalized suburbs there. |

Sad when MLB thinks the rays were such a bad idea they want to send them to Montreal. |

Go to Montreal and you see expos gear in just about every gift shop, not sports shop. Someone is still pining for baseball in Montreal. |

I think it was more the firesale/s that turned off people to going to that shitty stadium to see increasingly shitty baseball. Not only did you have a major fire sale take place by the time baseball came back in 95, but then you'd go on to have Pedro Martinez win the Cy Young in 97 only to get traded for Carl Pavano and Tony Armas Jr. in 1998. Then by the time you get to 2001 they're trading Grady Sizemore Brandon Phillips and a toss-in of Cliff Lee for a 1/2 season rental of Bartolo Colon to try and chase a wildcard? that went so well they went and reacquired Cliff Floyd and ended up sending him off elsewhere right before the trade deadline. that's the kind of stuff that truly killed les expos, although I suppose it's easier and sexier to just say it was the strike that killed baseball in Montreal. |

Curious nailed it....all of those things were a factor. What you mentioned is true...falls under the "Jeffrey Loria was the owner" category |
