Honestly, nuke Boston. God forbid you go a season after winning it all with disappointment. Most spoiled city when it comes to pro sports and it's not even close. Fuck off. |

Surprising. Even for the Red Sox. |

Not surprising. He doesn't understand the word rebuild, he is more stubborn than Kenny Williams but more successful. Ownership wants to make some profit the next two years while they rebuild their farm system and trade major league guys they can't extend. You dont need Dombrowski around for that, he will do something insane like trade for Kris Bryant. |

Red Sox "face a near future clouded by a jammed payroll and a thinned farm system" Dombrowski only values prospects as trade-bait. He cleaned out the Tigers farm system trying to win a WS there, didn't work out. Dombrowski left the Tigers saddled with an absurd/unnecessary Cabrera contract and a farm-system competing with the Orioles for worst in baseball. Red Sox had to stand-pat most recent trade deadline cuz Dombrowski had already shipped out all their top prospects in previous trades. Henry had to know what he was getting bringing in Dombrowski from their time together with the Marlins. Give Dombrowski a packed farm-system to trade away and unlimited budget and he'll put a winning team on the field as long as the prospects/money last. |

Did I actually hear someone on mully and boring try to claim that Theo might be heading back into Boston? Pretty sure it was discussed. |

But in Detroit, he was following Mike Illich's directive to go balls out to win a WS every single year until Illich died, and fuck the future after that. Everybody knew it, including the fans and the other teams. Not many ownership groups are like that. |

Everybody knew it, including the fans and the other teams. Not many ownership groups are like that. Very true. Illitch had played minor league baseball (iirc) and so took a greater interest in dickering with the roster of his baseball team than he usually did on the hockey side. Illitch's achilles heel was his loyalty. One off-season during Dombrowski's tenure Tigers' grindy white-guy 3B Brandon Inge was about to enter free agency and, hopefully, be done in Detroit. Same deal with Magglio Ordonez, free agent who the Tigers had better options on the open market to replace. In Inge's case, it woulda/coulda/shoulda been Adrian Beltre. Dombrowski, in an unusual move for him, held a presser on the Tigers last road trip in B'More to announce the Tigers would be extending offers to both Inge and Maggs, and that it was on orders from the owner. Dombrowski phrased it more diplomatically, something like "the owner had greater input into these personnel decisions than usual". Beltre, fresh off a 1 year prove-something deal with the Red Sox, lingered in free agency til almost Spring Training, before signing with the Rangers. Inge bat .197 the next season, before being cut loose the year after. But not before the Tigers would lose to Beltre and the Rangers in the ALCS. Inge over Beltre and Franzen over Hossa were both loyalty decisions from the owner. Both prolly cost his teams return trips to their respective league's finals. |

Peter Gammons was on Buster Olney's show talking about the desirability of the Red Sox front-office job. Olney baited Gammons to spill some dirt about the unstable environment inside the Red Sox front-office. Gammons didn't get specific--but he made it sound like everyone in the Red Sox front-office with Jupyter scikit installed on their laptop thinks they're the next Theo and that they should be running things. |

Has theo ever drafted / developed a pitcher other than Lester? Going back to his red Sox teams the 04 team only had Lester for ~10 regular season starts, same with 07, and maybe someone like Steven Wright played a bit role in 2013? Suckholz? I reckon many a cubs fan would be happy to see him go back to Boston 2bqh |

TINSTAAPP However, as Olney noted to Gammons, the inscrutability of pitching prospects to sabermetricians doesn't account for Theo and the Yanks/Red Sox all whiffing on Verlander when he was on the trade block a couple seasons back. You didn't even need any advance metrics to see that Verlander was being undervalued. The Indians rocked Verlander a couple times early that season, skewing his overall numbers. isn't it stats 101 to drop outliers and base your analysis on what remains. JV currently leading the AL in: Wins 18 ERA 2.52 ERA+ 182 WHIP 0.770 H9 5.3 BB9 1.6 SO/W 7.33 Not quite peak Pedro Martinez but likely good enough to score Verlander another Cy Young. Verlander's arm could've fallen off after he threw his last pitch in the 2017 post-season and the trade would've been a win for the Astros. That he's still killing it 2 years on is a yooge unexpected plus. |
