I dont know how you give this kind of money to a guy who pretty proudly and openly admits he doesn't like his job much. |

It won't be as bad as when they took on the Vernon Wells money, right? Or am I thinking of someone else? I know the angels have a history of bad contracts going past Pujols and Josh Hamilton going all the way back to Tim Salmon IIRC. Arte tends to throw around a lot of bad money so go figure he's the guy who famously lowered his fans' beer prices some years back. |

The first big contract they made a mistake on was Mo Vaughn. He showed up fat and then fell into the dugout chasing a fly ball. Vernon Wells was a humiliating one for Moreno. Scioscia didn't like Napoli. Moreno did but let Scioscia talk him into a trade. They knew Texas liked Napoli a lot so they traded him to Toronto to keep him from the Rangers. Toronto traded him to Texas the next day and we ended up with a post steroid Vernon Wells and Juan Rivera. Napoli was an Angel killer... Moreno wanted Torii Hunter and told Stoneman to make a deal for him. Stoneman was the ultimate bottom line GM...he would not spend money even when the owner was telling him to. He convinced Moreno that Gary Mathews Jr. was just as good as Hunter and he would be a lot cheaper. I remember I was driving to Indianapolis and listening to the Score when they announced we'd signed Mathews Jr. The station was breaking up and I heard 5 years 15 million and I thought we got screwed. Later that night I found out it was 5 years 50 million. Then he got popped for steroids and Stoneman was out. Moreno has spent money he just hasn't been listening to the right people and he's interfered like with the Pujols deal. Eppler seems like the 1st good GM we've had in a long time... |
