Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association agreed Thursday to expand the playoffs to 16 teams for the 2020 season, the sides announced.

All second-place teams in the six divisions will now qualify for the playoffs. The seventh and eighth teams in each league will be chosen by best record.

The first round of the playoffs, scheduled for Sept. 29-Oct. 2, in each league will be four three-game series with all games played at the higher seed's home stadium. The rest of the rounds will be their customary length: The two Division Series in each league will be five-game series, while the American League and National League Championship Series and World Series will be seven-game series.

Because MLB and NFL have it right. The playoffs are actually an accomplishment. Half the league making the playoffs like the NBA and NHL is terrible.

I don't disagree in general, but this season is a big experiment.

I don't like the division winners not getting any meaningful reward. They should have made it 7 teams per league and forced the 4-7 to play for the right to face the 1 seed.

I assumed the division winners get a bye into the divisional round, and the second place teams get to play each other in that three-game series

Yeah, the only reward for finishing first instead of second is that you are guaranteed to host the first round series. Meh.

Hopefully they stop the champagne celebrations for making the playoff now. I do like the higher seed gets all 3 games at home.

Your are not even playing 10 of the teams in your league this year.
